Valve announced Monday it will bring a Dota 2 major to the east coast with The Boston Major, the first Valve-run Dota tournament in North America outside The International. The developer said that it has partnered with tournament organizer PGL to hold the major Dec. 3-4 and 7-10 and will feature a $3,000,000 prize pool. The public will have access to the event, held at the Wang Theater, during the playoffs starting Dec. 7.
There will be sixteen teams, with open qualifiers taking place beginning Oct. 23-26, with the regional qualifiers for the event less than a week later on Oct. 27-30. The announcement makes no mention of invited teams.
Including The International, Boston Major will be the third Dota 2 event of the year, the first two which took place in Shanghai and Manila, Philippines. The Boston major kicks off a new cycle of events, which will also feature another major in the Spring and The International 7 in Aug. 2017.
