Here are all the key updates from December 2, Saturday:


Football: Bagan win, climb to third

Late, late goals from Brendan Hammill (85th minute) and Asish Rai (96th minute) saw Mohun Bagan beat struggling Hyderabad FC 2-0 away, to climb to third on the table They are just two points behind early leaders Kerala Blasters but they have a whopping three matches in hand over the leaders. Hyderabad meanwhile, continue to lurch in crisis at the bottom of the table with three points in eight games (from three draws).

Meanwhile, in the I-League, Real Kashmir and Aizawl played out a 0-0 draw to keep them 3rd and 6th, while Gokulam Kerala came from 1-2 down to take a 2-2 draw against Namdhari to keep them 5th and 11th respectively.


PKL: Gujarat Giants win opener; U Mumba match 2

Pawan Kumar Sehrawat was stopped in his tracks by Gujarat's Iran-led defence as Fazel Atrachali and Esmaeil Nabibakhsh inspired the Giants to a 38-32 win over the Telugu Titans. PKS and the Giants' Sonu Jaglan top-scored with 11 points.

U Mumba then beat UP Yoddha in a closer-fought match where another Iranian - all rounder Amirmohammad Zafardanesh - stole the show with a match-high 12 point haul (6 raid, 1 tackle, 5 bonus).

Badminton: Ponappa-Crasto in Syed Modi Intl. final

In the first men's semifinal, Japan's Kento Nishimoto beat France's Alex Lanier 21-17, 13-21, 21-17. In the final, Nishimoto will now face the winner of the semii between Priyanshu Rajawat and Yu Jen Chi.

And that winner is Chi, after the Chinese Taipei athlete beat Rajawat 18-21, 21-14, 21-17

Meanwhile, Ashwini Ponnappa and Tanisha Crasto will face Japan's Iwanaga and Nakanishi in the final... their semi ended prematurely after Fukushima-Hirota retired hurt while leading 11-10 in the first game.


Hockey: India out of Jr Women's World Cup

India lost 2-3 to Belgium in the junior World Cup in Chile to make it two losses and a win in their group stage. In a thrilling match, Belgium took a 2-0 lead before India pulled it back to 2-2 only to lose to a late goal. Now, Germany need just a draw against Canada to make it through to the knockouts alongside Belgium. Considering Canada have conceded 20 goals and scored none in two matches, this seems a reasonable result to expect.

UPDATE: Germany beat Canada 8-0. India finish third in their group, and are now out of the Jr World Cup.


Boxing: Amit Panghal and Shiva Thapa win gold

Amit Panghal - former Worlds silver medalist, and left out of the 2023 Asian Games squad due to newly implemented selection criteria - won gold at the men's boxing Nationals today. He beat Anshul Punia in the 51kg final by unanimous decision. Also winning big was Shiva Thapa who beat reigning youth world champion Vanshaj in the 63.5kg final.

Meanwhile, Sagar - 2022 CWG silver medalist - lost to Jaipal Singh in the 92+kg final, Sanjeet won 92kg, Lalit 54kg, Barun Singh 48kg, Sachin 57kg, Akash 60kg, Rajat 67kg, Akash 71kg, Deepak 75kg and Lakshya 80kg.

Akash was presented the best boxer of the tournament award.


Anand is very happy for Vaishali

Legend Viswanathan Anand congratulated Vaishali on her achievement. He also tweeted, "For some charity begins at home... for others competition begins at home!!"

Vaishali becomes a Grandmaster

Another Indian Grandmaster in chess and this time, it's a special one.

Vaishali Rameshbabu became the country's 84th Grandmaster and only third Indian woman to achieve the title. She and her brother Praggnanandhaa are also the first brother-sister duo to earn the Grandmaster title in chess.

Vaishali achieved the feat of crossing 2500 live ratings after winning her first two matches at the ongoing Ellobregat Open in Spain.

It has been a great year for Vaishali who had earlier qualified for the Candidates Tournament. She and Praggnanandhaa are also set to became the first brother-sister duo to play at their respective Candidates tournament. Vaishali earned her third GM norm earlier this year and later won the FIDE Grand Swiss tournament. She was also part of the women's chess team at the Asian Games, winning a silver in the team event.

Harika Dronavalli was the last Indian woman to achieve the GM title way back in 2012. Konery Humpy was the country's first female GM back in 2002.


What else is in store today?

  • Mohun Bagan SG play their first ISL match in more than a month, as they take on Hyderabad FC.

  • Day seven of the men's National Boxing Championships.

  • Action from the fourth day of the Syed Modi badminton tournament - as Priyanshu Rajawat is the lone Indian left in the singles, at the semifinal stage, while the women's doubles pair of Tanisha Crasto and Ashwini Ponnappa will also play their semifinal.

  • India face Belgium in a crunch clash at the junior women's hockey World Cup (at 6:30pm), needing a win to quality for the quarterfinals. If India draw or lose, they will depend on Germany dropping points to Canada in the other game in the group.


What happened yesterday?

  • The ISL saw a 1-0 win for Odisha FC over Jamshedpur FC, as Roy Krishna scored the only goal of the game, to give them their fifth win in a row in all competitions.

  • The Syed Modi tournament saw Priyanshu Rajawat and the women's doubles pair of Tanisha Crasto and Ashwini Ponnappa qualify for the semifinal

  • Amit Panghal and Shiva Thapa moved into the finals of the men's National Boxing Championships.
