Shardul Thakur will lead Mumbai in Ranji Trophy 2025-26, which begins on October 15. The 16-member squad for the opening match against Jammu and Kashmir in Srinagar includes Shivam Dube and Sarfaraz Khan. Ajinkya Rahane, who was leading Mumbai till last season, is also in the side, but Suryakumar Yadav is not part of it.
Thakur was part of India's Test squad for the England tour and played two of the five Tests but he was not picked for the ongoing West Indies. His last outing was the Duleep Trophy match against Central Zone in Bengaluru.
Sarfaraz had missed the Duleep Trophy due to a quadriceps injury he suffered at the Buchi Babu tournament just before that. Dube, who has been selected for India's five-match T20I series down under, starting October 29, will play the first round of the Ranji Trophy before leaving for Australia.
Rahane, who had helped Mumbai break a nine-year drought by leading them to their 42nd Ranji title in 2023-24, resigned from captaincy in August. Last domestic season, Jammu and Kashmir had beaten Mumbai by five wickets in the group stage under Rahane's captaincy, when they chased 205 down at the Sharad Pawar Cricket Academy.
