England have appointed Matthew Mott as their white-ball head coach for four years. Mott beat Paul Collingwood and Gary Kirsten, among others, for the role and though he is best known for his stint with the Australia women's team - during which he turned them into the most dominant white-ball team in world cricket, he has had a long and diverse coaching career.
Mott's professional career as a batter ends, a C&G Trophy game as a guest player for Netherlands (who will be his first opponents as England coach). He scores 41. He finishes with a first-class average of 33, having played most of his career for Queensland and then Victoria through the mid-90s.
2005 Mott begins his coaching career as an assistant to Trevor Bayliss at New South Wales (NSW) and is then appointed an assistant to Brian McFadyen, who is head coach of Australia Under-19s side for the 2006 U19 World Cup.
2007 Is appointed coach of New South Wales, taking over from Bayliss. He's just finished a six-week coaching exchange working with Graham Ford at Kent, where he meets Rob Key, the current managing director of the ECB.
2008 Joins John Buchanan as an assistant coach at Kolkata Knight Riders for the first season of the IPL, having won the Pura Cup with NSW in his first season with them. He links up with Brendon McCullum at KKR, now his red-ball counterpart with England. Mott was due to be part of Australia's coaching team for a tour to Pakistan though that was eventually cancelled for security reasons.
2008 Mott turns down the New Zealand head coach job to replace John Bracewell. He opts to continue with NSW.
2009 Wins the old Big Bash with NSW. Mott's NSW side includes McCullum, whose decision to play for them attracts a fair bit of criticism.
2009 A poor IPL season sees KKR finish bottom. Buchanan is sacked and though Mott interviews for the head coach position, KKR pick Dav Whatmore. Mott's involvement with KKR ends.
2009 Wins the inaugural Champions League T20 as coach of NSW.
2010 Joins head coach Tim Nielsen as part of the coaching team for Australia's 2010 World T20 campaign in the Caribbean. As an assistant, Mott works with the batters. Australia make the final, where England beat them.
2011 Among contenders as coach for the (now-defunct) Kochi Tuskers, Mott eventually signs up with Glamorgan. That ends seven years with NSW, four as head coach, and several titles, including a first-class title and two T20 triumphs. Does a three-season stint with Glamorgan, which includes a run to the Yorkshire Bank Pro40 final.
2012 New Zealand come calling again, with Mott on a three-man shortlist to replace John Wright as coach. Mott interviews with NZC - where Buchanan is director, but decides to stay on with Glamorgan.
2014 Mott joins Ireland as a batting coach ahead of the 2015 World Cup, first on a three-week assignment and then as part of the touring squad to the subcontinent.
2015 Appointed head coach of the Australia women's team, having also spent three seasons as an assistant coach at Sydney Sixers by this time. That begins a six-year stint in which he turns the side into the most dominant white-ball team around, as they win the T20 World Cup in 2018 and 2020, and the ODI World Cup earlier this year.
2019 Appointed Welsh Fire women's coach at The Hundred, but never takes up the role because the Covid-19 pandemic sets back the launch by a year. Travel restrictions the following year, as the tournament starts, means Mott pulls out, and is replaced by Mark O'Leary.
2022 Appointed head coach of the England men's white-ball sides.
