So, Philander finishes with 4 for 27, and will be on a hat-trick when Sri Lanka bat again. And in the course of that innings he passed 150 Test wickets. Not quite as brisk as his first 50, but a fine effort all the same.
Sri Lanka managed to lose all ten wickets for 79, which, says Gaurav Sundararaman, is their most dramatic collapse in Tests against South Africa. Nice one lads!
And not to be outdone, our Lord Chief Justice of Statsguru, S Rajesh, points out that they lost eight wickets for 54, which is their third worst eight-wicket meltdown ever!
In his end-of-year review, Sambit Bal - the big boss - picked out collapses as a trend for 2016. This is a good (or bad) start to 2017.
