20 | 21 Runs | MI: 180/5 | RR: 9.00

9:24pm A whirlwind finish to the innings, with Dhir and Suryakumar the chief protagonists. At one stage, it felt MI would huff and puff their way to 160, but in the end, courtesy this pair, they have blasted their way to 180. Some of their hitting was just breath-taking and they toyed with the field, accessing areas where the Capitals had no protection. Prior to that carnage, Tilak struggled his way to 27, with Jacks and Rickelton producing more aggressive cameos earlier in the innings.

DC bowled beautifully for about 18 overs, with du Plessis marshaling his troops excellently too. But when the wheels came off, their charge got derailed and it got derailed in pretty damning fashion. 48 runs came off the last two overs and that undid a bit of the good work their spinners did. DC, with du Plessis, Rahul and Stubbs in the mix, have the firepower to chase this down, but they might just be hunting a slightly above-par score here. Join us in a bit for the chase!

Suryakumar Yadav: (On if he is proud of this innings) Absolutely. This is one innings which I was hoping for a long time: a difficult situation, to bat through to the end. Maybe it (the score) is a little above par. It was a slightly slow wicket with the weather around. We wanted to take it deep, talked about that during the practice sessions. Planned for it and batted accordingly. Waiting gives you a lot of fruits in life, but felt good inside (while batting). (On the score being above par) I have not checked the dew till now, we thought it was a 160-165 wicket. Let's see - good game on our hands.

Chameera to Yadav, 1 run, just a single, and MI finish with 180! Nails the wide yorker, more or less, and prevents SKY from getting under it. He throws his hands at it and slices it on the bounce to deep backward point. SKY takes off his helmet and walks off to applause, even as the Capitals fielders around him try to fathom what has hit them!

Last ball coming up. Surely MI will make it past 180?

Chameera to Yadav, FOUR, stop that, Suryakumar Yadav! This is batting out of the highest of top drawers! This is the perfect yorker outside off but SKY is just too good. He opens his bat face and squeezes it to the keeper's right!
19.4
6
Chameera to Yadav, SIX, oh my goodness - the Mumbai mayhem continues! And this is proper world-class batting! Another missed yorker and this time, it ends up as a low full toss just outside off. SKY gets down low and clubs the living daylights out of this one. Flat over deep mid wicket!
19.3
6
Chameera to Yadav, SIX, NASA, lend us a space shuttle, because we need to get that ball back! Off-pace on a back of a length outside off and this is begging to be hit. SKY obliges and smears it a mile over deep mid wicket!
19.2
0
Chameera to Yadav, no run, low full toss on middle and leg, and SKY misses out. Chalks it right off the toe-end and shanks it towards mid wicket
19.1
4
Chameera to Yadav, FOUR, why should Naman Dhir have all the fun, asks Suryakumar Yadav! Chameera does not help himself or his team by bowling a wide half-volley. SKY gets his hands through the ball and thunders it over extra cover!

That last over has changed the complexion of this contest. MI well within reach of 170 now, and that could be a very good score on a slightly sluggish surface. Chameera to bowl the 20th

Mukesh Kumar to Naman Dhir, FOUR, blitzed across the turf, and the Wankhede Stadium has found its voice all of a sudden! Right in the slot outside off. Dhir opens up his stance, gives his hands the freedom to go through the line and scorches it past extra cover!
18.5
6
Mukesh Kumar to Naman Dhir, SIX, a high ball and to MI's pleasure, it is a long enough ball too! Slower bumper outside off. No pace to work with for Dhir but he swings his blade like an axe. Gets under it but still manages to muscle it over Rizvi at long on. Rizvi might have misjudged it slightly and had to thus reach out over his shoulder, only managing a parry over the fence!

Mukesh is struggling again and has asked for more help from the physio. The umpire is asking DC to hurry things up. This innings has already lasted more than an hour and 45 minutes...

18.4
6
Mukesh Kumar to Naman Dhir, SIX, flat as a tank! Dhir, SKY and MI are turning it on now! Another missed yorker and this is into the slot on leg stump. Dhir snaps his wrists into action and whips it over the wide long on fence!
18.3
4
Mukesh Kumar to Naman Dhir, FOUR, oh, hello! Dhir wants a piece of Mukesh too! A bit on the shorter side and this sits up outside off. Dhir rises with the bounce, stands tall and crashes it over extra cover!

Kuldeep: "Another impressive innings for surya! He has been MI's constant throughout this season."

18.2
1
Mukesh Kumar to Yadav, 1 run, back of a length wide outside off. SKY shuffles across, gets stopped half-way trying to get into position for the sweep and hacks it in an ungainly fashion to deep mid wicket

Mukesh is good to go now, and so are we

Looks like Mukesh is struggling with a bout of cramp and he is receiving treatment as I type this out

18.1
6
Mukesh Kumar to Yadav, SIX, SKY with a sumptuous shot to bring the crowd to their feet! This is an attempted wide yorker but ends up being a slot ball. SKY extends his arms fully and creams it over extra cover. A fifty under pressure and while this may not be his most fluent effort ever, it may be very important!

This innings has gone nowhere in the past few overs. The only positive for MI is that SKY is still out there and he can change things in a trice. Can he do so against Mukesh this over?

END OF OVER:
18 | 6 Runs | MI: 132/5 | RR: 7.33

  • Mustafizur Rahman4-0-30-1
  • Dushmantha Chameera3-0-33-1
17.6
1
Mustafizur Rahman to Yadav, 1 run, slow and short outside off. SKY waits for it and cuts it towards sweeper cover. Just six off the over, and this MI innings is in dire need of some impetus
17.5
0
Mustafizur Rahman to Yadav, no run, off-cutter angled across the batter on a back of a length. Well outside off and SKY, because of the lack of pace, cannot fetch it. Swish and a miss.
17.4
4
Mustafizur Rahman to Yadav, FOUR, SKY with a much-needed boundary! Misses the leg-stump yorker by a smidgen on the shorter side, and SKY makes the bowler pay. Swings through the line and thumps it past a flying du Plessis at mid on!
17.3
0
Mustafizur Rahman to Yadav, no run, back of a length wide outside off. SKY looks for one of those slashes over point but the lack of pace does for him
17.2
1
Mustafizur Rahman to Naman Dhir, 1 run, dug into the track just outside off. Dhir backs away and has to check his shot because the ball just does not arrive. Chips it on the bounce to long off
17.1
0
Mustafizur Rahman to Naman Dhir, no run, back of a length, slanting across the batter outside off. Dhir gets up on his toes and pats it towards backward point

This certainly has not been a typical Wankhede wicket, with the ball holding up and gripping regularly. MI would want at least 160 to ensure their bowling attack has something to work with. 34 runs away from 160 at the moment, though. Mustafizur to bowl out

END OF OVER:

Chameera to Yadav, no run, speared in full and wide. SKY tries to reach it and make something of it but is beaten for pace. That was not a slower ball, and it seemed to take the batter by surprise

Seems like SKY or Dhir asked for a change of bat, but the replacement might not have gone through the gauge. Back to the original piece of willow for now

16.5
1
Chameera to Naman Dhir, 1 run, back of a length just outside off. Cramped for room, Dhir stabs it towards long on
16.4
2
Chameera to Naman Dhir, 2 runs, off-pace on a back of a length outside off. Dhir plays it very late and right under his eyes, guiding it to backward point's right. Tiwari, stationed at sweeper cover, gives chase and cuts it off with a sprawling dive, saving two

Dhir is the new batter in. MI will need a hefty effort to get to 165-170 from here
