10:10pm A real dampener for the thousands that had gathered at the Sydney Showground Stadium. We were just one over away from constituting a game but in the end, the rain won. The Sydney Sixers will feel hard done by, but it is what it is. A point for the Sydney Thunder and that takes them up to sixth, level on points with the Melbourne Stars but ahead on NRR.

That's it from us for this game. Hope you enjoyed it while it was on, and we will be back with more BBL action tomorrow. Until then, this is goodbye from Shashwat, Sudeep and everyone else at ESPNcricinfo. Take care!

10:06pm It is official. The game has been called off. A bit of a shame for the sold-out crowd, given the action they had seen and how the match was shaping up. The Sixers and the Thunder get a point each.

9:55pm The cut-off time for the game to restart is 10:23pm local time, and the umpires reckon that it needs to stop raining by 10:03pm local time for the ground to be ready for play.

DaWolf: "Only one over away from making it a game, surely unless it's a complete downpour they should try to get that last over in before taking the players off?" -- That would be my thinking too. But the umpires felt it was heavy enough to come off, and the rain has only grown in intensity since.

9:30pm No positive update yet. The rain continues to fall, and the covers are firmly in place. If anything, the rain seems to have gotten heavier than when the players came off. And for what it is worth, we have already started losing overs.

9:20pm Uh-oh, the umpires have decided to take the players off. It is a drizzle at the moment, and we are just one over away from constituting a game. The players are walking off, rather than rushing off, and that indicates the rain might not be very heavy. The pitch has been covered and the square is being covered too.

8:45pm So, the Sydney Thunder end up with 151. Their innings did not really take off at any point. There were spurts, most notably when Ross and Sams shared a 70-run stand. Sams, though, fell just before the onset of the death overs, while Ross departed just prior to the last over. Green's 8-ball 17 did get the Thunder past 150, however, it remains to be seen if that is enough on a surface that has been a little sluggish but does not have any demons as such.

The Sixers, on the other hand, will be thrilled with their bowling effort. They kept chipping away, and the constant wicket-taking meant that the Thunder never generated a head of steam. Edwards was the pick of the bowlers, scalping three wickets. Bird bagged a couple, while Dwarshuis popped up with the wicket of Davies.

At the half-way stage, they will be confident of chasing this down, although they will be wary of the quality in the Thunder's bowling attack. Join us in a bit for the second innings!

Abbott to Sandhu, 1 run, low full toss on leg stump. Sandhu gives himself room and cloths it to mid off. Just a single to finish the innings!
19.5
1
Abbott to Green, 1 run, full on off stump. Green plants his front foot and drills it on the bounce to long off. He wanted the second too but he would never have gotten there. Vince was sharp off the mark
19.4
4
Abbott to Green, FOUR, yes, he can! Short, wide and begging to be hit. Green picks the slower one too and thrashes it, almost flat-batting it over extra cover for four!

Green back on strike. Can he find the fence?

1
Abbott to Sandhu, 1 run, low full toss on middle and leg. Sandhu backs away and pokes it towards extra cover
19.2
1
Abbott to Green, 1 run, short and wide outside off. Green does well to reach out but cannot do much with it. Slapped to extra cover
19.1
2
Abbott to Green, 2 runs, dropped, oh dear! Full, wide and hidden outside Green's usual hitting arc. He throws his hands at it and slices it straight down Patterson's throat at deep point, who, believe it or not, puts down an absolute sitter

Sandhu walks in. It is Green on strike for now. Abbott will bowl the last over

Bird to Ross, OUT, holes out to deep mid wicket! Back of a length outside off. The ball seems to stick in the surface a tad and that meddles with Ross' timing. He swipes at it anyway but ends up splicing it straight to Silk at deep mid wicket!

Bird to Green, SIX, Green goes big! Pace-on and in the slot at the stumps. Green gives Bird the charge and pumps it over the bowler's head!

Bird to Ross, 1 leg bye, what has happened here?! Slower delivery dug into the track on middle and leg. Ross advances and swipes across the line. Seems to flick off the bicep before lobbing into short third man's palms. The Sixers enquire whether the ball has brushed the glove but do not follow it up with a review

Bird to Ross, no run, off-pace on a back of a length outside off. Ross cuts it straight to backward point. He will feel he missed out there, especially with third man also up

Bird to Green, 1 run, length on middle and off. Green stays leg side of the ball and drives it on the up to long off

Right. Two overs left. How many can the hosts get from here? Can they get to 160?

Edwards to McAndrew, OUT, McAndrew falls! In the slot on leg stump. McAndrew opens up his stance and has a mighty swing at it. Gets decent contact but not enough to clear Silk at deep mid wicket, who first takes the overhead catch, lobs it up into the air, steps outside the rope and comes back in to complete the catch. Silk is so good at fielding that he made this look very routine!

Edwards to Ross, no run, oh, how has that missed?! Cutter on a length on middle and leg. Ross has a wild slog across the line and gets nowhere close to the ball. Another coat of paint on leg stump, and Ross would have been on his way!

Edwards to McAndrew, 1 leg bye, into the blockhole on leg stump. McAndrew plays all over it as the ball pings off his boot into the off side. Sliding well down leg, though, and hence no appeal
