5.36pm Well, a score is on the board in the 2023 World Cup. England ebbed and they flowed, and lost key wickets at critical junctures. But they bottomed out for their full 50 overs, and 283 to win is 42 more than these two teams last made in a World Cup.
England's efforts were anchored by Joe Root's 77 from 86, and while he and Jos Buttler were putting on a show in their 70-run fifth-wicket stand, 350 seemed on the cards. There were a few errors along the way - Bairstow, Brook and Moeen were particularly soft dismissals - but Matt Henry was brilliant at the top and tail, Santner gave nothing away with his left-arm spin and Phillips' golden arm struck twice in his isolated first two overs. And a word too for Latham who captained brilliantly, good juggling of his bowlers and excellent field placing too.
Glenn Phillips: "Brilliant today, they got off to a flyer so to get to 280 was very pleasing. When Stokes was rested, that was one left-hander out, but Tommy has plenty options and he used them well. A bit of nibble early on, the slow ones turned, it'll get better as it goes on."
Peter: "Have these two teams met in a World Cup before? I've not heard it mentioned in the build up or commentary......" Oddly enough yes, they played the World Cup opener on this same ground in 1996... hope that helps.
Akash: "You play calmly and get to 280.. you huff and puff and get to 280.. same difference. Huff and puff is more entertaining though."
Eye of Sauron: "For the first time, all 11 players of a team have scored in double digits in an ODI" Gosh. That stat is aided by England's highest tenth-wicket stand since 2016
Deiva will be back for the restart. Stay tuned!
