Scorer: Ranjith P | Commentator: Ekanth
Suryakumar collects the series trophy. Gill is signing autographs, high strike rate there too... he's racing across. For now, that's all we have. Thanks so much for having joined in. Comments were great. The bits of play were entertaining too. That's the wrap on the tour. Australia will next play the Ashes, India will host South Africa in a three-format tour. Cricket's always alive and buzzing on Cricinfo, so please do visit us, follow us. Also, take care. Bye!
Deb: "In case a match is abandoned, do the runs/wickets taken by the players in the unfinished match add up to the career stats of the players ?" Yes, it all counts after the toss
Suryakumar Yadav, India captain Weather isn't in our control. Credit to all the boys to bounce back after losing the first game. Bowlers, fast and spin, know their roles really well. Bumrah, Arshdeep and the spinners are all doing really well. They bring a lot to the table, plan for things and execute them which is what you want. Good headache to have wrt the squads for the WC. We have 2-3 series, which offers us a great build-up. I saw recently what happened with the women's team, who won the WC. There's a lot of excitement, support and responsibility at home. Exciting tournament but still a couple of series to go.
Mitchell Marsh, Australia captain Can't remember the last time we played without rain. It was a good series, congrats to India on the win. A lot of learnings, positives to take. Especially the flexibility in a world cup year. We'll be back to full strength for the WC. BBL will hopefully help prepare, and Scorchers win. He says he will be captaining at the WC, not Cummins.
Abhishek Sharma, POTS I've been waiting for this tour. I was excited from the time the series was confirmed. Pitches are batting-friendly. I feel we could've gotten bigger scores but we've done well in the series. The way Hazlewood was bowling would be useful. I've enjoyed my battles with him. I was practicing for these kinda bowlers because that's how you build momentum for your team. My captain and coach have given the responsibility to play freely and start big. They've given me clarity and space to go express myself. T20 WC is one of the biggest tournaments, it'll be a dream-come-true moment if and when I get to play there. I'll make sure I'll be ready for it.
8:49pm Aaaand we're done. Rain has had the final say. Match abandoned. India take the series 2-1 with two washouts
Soms: "Is Abhishekh player of series??" We'll know soon, in the presentation
Vinod Rajpal: "The series has been TIED between India and RAIN !"
Jason Mc: "Now is about the time where England would declare a moral victory" Oooo, the Ashes should be spicy
8:35pm Proper rain again, Gnasher says. He reckons the game is likely to be called off soon.
Avinash: "can you please send photos of the ground?" It's up here, on the Photos tab.
Jack: "As a wait for the inevitable game on the game. I wonder if we will ever get Esports for cricket one day? Maybe not given the ICC can't even get rights for players copyright right now"
Matthew: "When games are called off due to rain, give the players PlayStation 1s and have them battle it out at Brian Lara Cricket on the big screen!" Lara, who has played it but confessed not being good at it, would approve... surely
Jack: "I agree with the good folk at the local Germans Club (awesome venue!). Seeing flashes of lighting from my place across the river near the Gabba. Show's over I'm afraid…"
8:10pm Bleak chances of play restarting. Just seen a couple more lightning flashes. Still raining, and about to get heavier I think, Gnasher adds.
Atul: "I am sorry for this question but how should be pronounce the name "Gnasher"? Na-sher?Gna-sher?Nya-sher?" Second one's the closest, he says
Ishan: "Let's wrap the players in Bubble wrap and prevent them from a cold and an injury (that is waaaay more mossible in an impact sport like, Rugby, AFL, NFL, etc.. but still play in the rain, snow or hail), and let them play! " When do we get to clingfilm?
Mikey Haydon: "I'd love play with a roof, especially for white ball but as a Melbourne Renegades fan it's not exactly the best version of the sport. Outfield becomes disgusting and damp and it's just not a sporting vibe. We love to talk about taking weather out of the equation but it just won't be the same sport. "
Vaibhav Athalye: "My two 'Out of the Roof' cents: Just play the game in the rain. These athletes are fit enough to not catch a cold and have enough money to not worry about their gear getting spoiled. Just don't dive around too much or run too fast. Win for all." Nah, that's just dangerous. Poor Pratika Rawal picked up an injury at such a bad time recently
Azhagee : "Test your knowledge on WWC ! The quiz was a challenging one ! Some answers are totally unexpected! Excellent Draft by Yash and Sreshth"
Calvin: "Sittingin Brisbane German Club - undoubtedly the best stadium-adjacent venue in the world - watching the lightning get worse. I think it may be home time."
Jack: "Australia does have Docklands Stadium in Melbourne which hosts the Renegades in the BBL. Whilst it has a roof, it isnt a cricket venue and their outfield in recent times have been very average to say the least. Roofs sometimes aren't the answer."
Madhusudan : "Rather than roof, what about introducing synthetic pitch, rubber ball and fibre bat, all the key cricketing elements to be made waterproof." In that case, it needs to be the same for both sides. And while I don't know and am not confident about how rubber balls will play on synthetic pitches, I would like to see changes done to the ball. It's the one cricketing apparatus that doesn't get much change.
Seb Stevens-Hal: "Around an hour and a half since the start of the rain delay and people are still watching from the apartment blocks "
7:55pm Not raining at the moment, but no movement on the covers, says Gnasher. Umpire's briefly popped their heads out. Fourth official now walking towards the groundstaff area, he adds, five minutes later. Raining again, is the message two further minutes later...
Mathew: "2025 and still cricket hasn't found as solutions for rain. " Not sure if the solutions are cost-effective. Also roofs will need maintenance, which needs to be factored in as well. Such large-scale decisions have side-effects that are often not accounted for by the public.
Bikram is in the know too: "The rain has completely stopped. We are waiting for the umpires to come out."
7:44pm: Fans trying to start a Mexican wave, Gnasher says. Lightning still around he adds.
Rakesh Tejra: "My fav moment going to be when India lifts this trophy "
Piyush Patel : "My favourite moment, Shubhman's monster six in last game. " Nice! Tim David's hit was amaze too
Prasanna S: "For me the defining moment has to be - India winning a TOSS !!"
Akshay J: "I have to mention this here. The best thing for me personally, about India winning the world cup is, My wife, who is German, is suddenly a huge cricket fan. Thank you ladies!"
Rahul: "Have we started to lose overs?" Yep, 70 minutes already gone
7:35pm Lighter now, Gnasher says of the rain. There's a gap coming up but it's small and there's more behind it. Just been a flash of lightning as well. Nonetheless, there are cheers in the background from the fans at the ground. That's muted because, as Gnasher said, there's back-up rain.
Kishore: "@Ekanth Why cant we have a discussion on favourite moments in this series. Mine would be Washy's knock of 49*. " Nice, that's my dad's favourite too. Axar's spell last game for me. Others pls do share
Nabin Basnet: "How's the drainage system at Gabba? Please at least answer this. Thankyou" Haha, it's excellent
Vaibhav Athalye: "is it time to comment "I live x km away from the stadium and ..."?" That boat's sailed. Done a little while back.
joey: "so happy that Pant is batting again. had earlier seen him retired hurt. what had happened. against SA A side. " He retired hurt after being hit on the body. Details here. Shashank Kishore says Pant has returned to bat.
7:23pm The rain is washing across from right to left of the screen. It's pelting proper. Just the pitch and square covered. Three vehicles stand at the edges, there's the odd groundstaff worker on the field. Fans in the lower stands have moved up for shade.
Maddy: "what is the cut off time for 6 over shoot out" Had to ping Gnasher for help. He's not sure but guesses it would be around 9:30pm. Only 5.1 more overs to constitute a full game. But it is hosing down and needs time to clear up.
Jon Stevens-Hal: "We were here last year for the rain saturated Saturday of the Australia vs India test. Firstly, apologies to everyone if it's me who causes this to happen. Secondly, the ground was an absolute lake during the worst rain but then drained in 15 minutes before our eyes (only for it to rain again). The drainage at the Gabba has to be seen to be believed. Just preferably some other day, please."
Meanwhile... 'People looked at me like I had four heads', says Ryan Williams, an ex-Australia international footballer who gave up his passport for an Indian one, in order to fulfil a long-standing dream. This is why he did it.
Machakaari : "The longer the rain duration (just before cut off), the higher are Australia's chances of leveling the series! No wonder tosses are massive when rains are expected!"
7:17pm Rain has gotten heavier, Gnasher confirms. 'Reckon at least another half an hour of rain, maybe more,' he adds. Gambhir, with arms folded, looks wistfully into the middle distance.
Nikhil: "What happened to the indoor stadium in Australia? Why are no matches being played there?"
allie: "so we starting to lose overs? " not confirmed but it seems inevitable
MW: "Time to open the "stadiums should have a roof" argument again? " Single-tear plus smile emoji
6:53pm 'Now raining,' reports Gnasher. 'The heaviest rain may slip just south of us,' he adds ten minutes later. As you wait, you can check out some of the best bits from our site. Maybe take the WWC quiz from yesterday, Ashes squad comparisons from Andrew Miller, our UK editor, and Gnasher, our deputy editor in Australia, or Pratika Rawal's delightful quotes.
mohit: "I am just a little over 11,600 km from Gabba here in Los Angeles. I am getting showered heavily with moon rays, so I can imagine how bad is it over there. hope it clears soon for showers of 4s and 6s in Brisbane."
Richard A: "Can I update local weather in Haiku form?Rain falls at Toowong, Alas, Gabba will be soon,Fans and players sigh." That's 5, 7, and 5 syllables indeed. Kudos!
Kim: "I'm 50 mins south of the game and the thunder and lightning are enough to see my cat scuttling inside."
Sri Krishna: "Is it my name thats problem? some gets hatrick and I get golden duck.never got my comment published !" Comments like this are too meta/self-referential. It needs to be smarter or funnier or insightful to make the cut
Jacob: "Just finished here in toowoomba. Was short and sweet, depends if it gains as the rain rolls east."
Shiyalwala Chet: "when will deduction in overs start?" 30 minutes of lost time for a start is the general rule
Jeff from Tas: "As an Aussie, are we trying to lose the series. Dropping Abhishek 3 times inside the powerplay across two matches will go a long way towards it. This guy is the business, so you've gotta take your chances!" Might not mean much given the current weather circumstances
Jon Stevens-Hal: "Can Bumrah just bowl a couple of overs while we wait here at the Gabba? We might not get many more chances to see him in Australia and this feels a bit unfair "
Sowmya : "Here is my hatrick attempt : "Amazing/ Awesome Abhishek" (fastest to 1000 T20I runs in just 528 balls) keep going Abhishek!" More informative than entertaining but it is an official hat-trick
6:41pm: Lower parts of the stands now being cleared, Gnasher says. 'Severe weather alert on the scoreboard.' Settle in folks, this delay is unlikely to be (Matt) short. The scoreboard says, 'it is unsafe to remain in open areas. Please seek shelter under cover and follow instructions.'
Krishan: "I'm at the game and there's not one bit of lightning in the sky le alone any rain and yet the covers are on and the players are off. Shouldn't they be trying to get in as many overs in case the rain does come?!" The message being relayed on air is that it is a preventative measure. Health and safety comes first, as it should, in such situations. Better to err on the side of caution
Febin Benjamin: "perhaps one would ponder that this bad weather break is what the Aussies really needed to break this partnership. We shall see!"
Sam Trevor: "The forecast is only for an hour of rain. If that holds, any chance for the game to resume?" The ground drains well, will depend how much rain we get, is Gnasher's response
Chris: "Isn't it ironic that only lightning could temporarily pause a lightning innings?" Irony sizzling with electricity
Vardan : "If this match is abandoned, does India then win the series?" yes, by a 2-1 margin
6:35pm Umpire Shawn Craig is looking around. On-air comms say there's lightning in the background. So, as a precautionary measure, covers come on. 'Rain is closing in, and there's some very heavy stuff on the radar,' Gnasher reports. 'Covers now going on, in preparation of the rain,' he adds. "Have you ever seen rain" by CCR playing in the background, observes Sidharth Monga.
Dushyant: "They can still play on the covers" Yeah, and if that's not enough, they can get extra covers...
James: "Lightning delay!" Should've come like thunder but this break took a step further.
Sunitha : "Before @ sowmya attempts her hat trick let me step in "Grill by Gill" !" Two people now on a hat-trick
Shubha : "While it remains to be seen whether Abhishek Sharma would make use of the drops and hurt Australia, no 2nd thoughts that he will keep hitting !" Guess this was the only way he could be stopped
Sree: "Dwarshuis should be bowling now. The person who drops a catch always gets the wicket " That's a nice theory
Sowmya : "Storm before the storm !" Two in two. Hat-trick on the cards
Sowmya : "3.3 Anxious Dwarshuis!"
They're building towards a strong squad for the tournament, but some concerns linger
Gill was in sublime touch as India raced away to 52 for no loss in 4.5 overs before lightning and rain took over
India go into the next T20I World Cup as strong favourites, but their captain isn't fully buying into that talk
India's spinners have started to dominate but the Gabba surface may not be quite as conducive for them
