Dewald Brevis is out practising some high catches, and Andrew Miller has been warming up with some touch-typing drills for the best part of an hour. He's here to take you through some Five5 - or should that be The Thirty? - action.

9.37pm: Restart at 9.48pm, England need 69 to win off 30 balls. That'll be a 1.3-over Powerplay, if my maths is right, with five bowlers bowling one over each. England have serious power to burn with Salt, Buttler, Bethell, Brook, Curran, Jacks, Banton and Overton queuing up... but Jansen and Rabada might be a handful in the damp.

Sampath Bandarupalli tells me England's target in a seven-over chase would be 92. They'd need 81 to win in six overs, or 69 in five.

Officially the innings break per Ian Ward on Sky. It's stopped raining, and the hover-cover has come off. "It's pretty much gone how you thought a nine-over game would go," says Nasser Hussain, which is succinct analysis. Top hitting from Markram, Brevis and Ferreira, with Wood impressive up top with the new ball.

9.30pm: Athers reckons it's already stopped, just as Sky cut to an ad break. Vish says it's only the hover-cover on, none of the side ones. Reckon we're looking at a seven-over run chase starting soonish. Which would leave England needing plenty!

9.28pm: And they're off! That'll be the end of the innings, surely. But will the rain clear enough for England to try and chase something down? We're running the clock down very quickly, but let's hope that it's just a squally shower as the radar indicates.

Overton to Ferreira, SIX, snaps his wrists through it, and somehow clears the straight boundary! Incredible hitting. Full, sliding into the pads. Ferreira clears his front leg, and melts him up and over mid-off

It's sheeting down! Umbrellas up in the stands, coats on. "Should pass very quickly," reckons Andrew Miller, after a glance at his radar.

7.4
1
Overton to Jansen, 1 run, hard length, worked out to midwicket

You've got to be kidding me... we thought the rain was all done for tonight, but it's just started pouring again! Jansen is the new man, and they're staying out there for now...

7.3
W
Overton to Stubbs, OUT, yorked on the reverse-scoop! 86mph, full and straight, you miss, I hit. Stubbs steps across and looks to flick him over his right shoulder this time, up and over short third, but instead hears the death-rattle and skips back off to the dressing room

T Stubbs b Overton 13 (7m 6b 1x4 1x6) SR: 216.66

0
Overton to Stubbs, no run, full toss, gets away with it! Stubbs shimmied outside leg to give himself room, and couldn't reach this freebie outside his off stump
7.1
6
Overton to Stubbs, SIX, scooped into the Taff! Plop! Slower ball from Overton, banged in halfway down, but Stubbs was in position early and breaks his wrists to flick it over his left shoulder and up over the sightscreen. Beware on the towpath...

Two overs left for England to find. Overton will bowl this one, presumably leaving Curran for the ninth.

Peter: "Sammy didn't take long to make his mark back in the side."

2
Curran to Ferreira, 2 runs, yorker outside off, slapped hard out to deep cover where Banton makes a good sliding stop on the rope

Shaun: "So good to see Jansen back in the team!"

6.5
2
Curran to Ferreira, 2 runs, banged in haflway down, pulled hard out to deep midwicket. Salt flings it into the keeper's end, but Ferreira does well to scamper back for the second
6.4
1
Curran to Stubbs, 1 run, another loopy moon ball, chipped back down the ground. Jacks slides around to his right and does well to cut it off. Down at 50mph this time...
6.3
2
Curran to Stubbs, 2 runs, nudged into the leg side, and Overton's gallop in from long-on can't prevent the second. He throws to the bowler's end off-balance while sliding, but Curran can't quite gather in time to break the stumps

Ryan: "You've got to be excited bout this SA side for next year's T20 world cup"

6.2
4
Curran to Stubbs, FOUR, flashed hard away through short third! 82mph this time, Stubbs throws his hands and it flies away off the outside edge

Tristan Stubbs walks in at No. 6.

51mph first up! Brevis shouted "no way!" as the ball looped up to Dawson - picked up on the stump mic - admonishing himself for such a soft dismissal.

6.1
W
Curran to Brevis, OUT, starts with a wicket! It's the moon-ball to start, lobbing up so slow as to barely register on the speed gun. Brevis waits for it, but not quite long enough, and it skews up off his outside edge to the man at backward point as he looks to maul it over mid-on

D Brevis c Dawson b Curran 23 (15m 10b 0x4 3x6) SR: 230

Curran. His first England appearance of 2025, and his first under McCullum. I doubt he anticipated it would come in a nine-over game

6
Rashid to Ferreira, SIX, googly, too short, and nailed into the 10th row at midwicket! Three sixes in Rashid's over. That sounded like gunshot off the middle of the bat. Ferreira sits deep in the crease, and the David Brent lookalike in the black coat takes the most nonchalant crowd catch you'll ever see!
5.5
0
Rashid to Ferreira, no run, fired through, miscued into the leg side
5.4
6
Rashid to Ferreira, SIX, tossed up, and swung into the crowd! Ferreira sees it go above the eyeline and needs no second invitation. He throws the kitchen sink and crunches him over wide long-on
5.3
1
Rashid to Brevis, 1 run, googly, flubbed down to wide long-on with a mishit
5.2
6
Rashid to Brevis, SIX, swing, batter, batter, swing! Dragged down by Rashid, Brevis holds his shape and absolutely crunches him into the stand at midwicket. That's a huge blow

1
Dawson to Ferreira, 1 run, full and straight, slapped down to long-on

England have three straight fielders: long-on, long-off, and one directly behind Dawson in the ring.

4.5
1
Dawson to Brevis, 1 run, cramps him for room, punched down to long-off
4.4
0
Dawson to Brevis, no run, gives himself room outside leg, so Dawson fires in the wide yorker. Just about inside the tramline
4.3
6
Dawson to Brevis, SIX, attempted yorker, disappears back over his head! Dawson misses his length, and Brevis crunches the low full-bunger into the sightscreen
4.2
6
Dawson to Brevis, SIX, monstered back over Dawson's head for a huge six! Outrageous from Brevis. Full outside off. Gives himself room, and throws his hands at it. Keeps his head down for a no-look six!

1lb
Dawson to Ferreira, 1 leg bye, sliding into the pad, diverted to midwicket via the shin

Dawson is on at the Taff End.

Nathan: "I think runs are more important than wickets. SA just need to keep hitting!" -- Yep, that's pretty much the essence of Nine9 cricket...
