England's Test summer is off to a strong start again. The last day was action-packed despite the rain and the hosts came through the tension rather almost effortlessly. Long road to go for India, but there is an eight-day game between this and the next Test at Edgbaston. There'll be lots to unpack meanwhile, so do follow us here on ESPNcricinfo. For now, it's goodbye.

Day 5 report by Matt Roller: Duckett 149 lays the foundation as England hunt down 371 at Headingley

Ben Stokes, England captain: We've got some good memories here, one more to add. Awesome Test to be part of, chasing a big total on the last day. You don't know what'll happen before a ball's bowled, you take the choice that you think is best. We thought of what'll give us the best chance to win while deciding to bowl. Opposition are allowed to play well, we bowled well in the first session, India also played incredibly on day one. Didn't think I should've made a different call at anytime. Duckett unbelievable, opening the batting and chasing is tough. His stand with Crawley, getting that set us up brilliantly. The way Zak was able to stay composed and get 60 was important as well. They complement each other nicely. Chasing down totals gives you confidence but it's not dead-set that's how it goes. It's been a great start to the series. There's been a lot of skill contributing to win, we've been in the field for long periods, but we turned up each session with an attitude that we'll blow the game open. Tongue's spells were game changing. (England's bowlers looking ineffective?) No. Last day shows it was a good wicket. Having a good attitude was important, we did that. Hard work and toil we put to bowling to the top order paid off as Tongue took out the tail. Great to get the series started, looking forward to the next one.

Shubman Gill, India captain: A brilliant Test, we had our chances. Drop catches, lower not contributing cost us. Yesterday, we were thinking of giving them 430, but our last wickets fell for 25. Even today, I thought we had our chances after the brilliant first wicket. Didn't go to hand. We spoke about the first-inns collapse, happens, we have to rectify that going forward. Chances don't come easy on wickets like this, but we have a young team. Learning one. Hope to improve that. The first session, we bowled spot-on. Didn't give away runs, but it's hard to stop runs once it gets old. Have to keep taking wickets when the ball got soft. Jadeja bowled brilliantly, created chances, had a pop-up Rishabh didn't see. Happens. (Which games will Bumrah play?) It's decided game-by-game. Once we're close to the next game after a long break, we'll see.

Ben Duckett, POTM: Just an incredible game, India were superb. To go into day 5, finish like we did was incredible. Wanted to get through last evening without losing wickets. It was clear this morning - if we batted through, we'd get home. 2022 was mentioned, I wasn't there. Guys in the dressing room believe. We've shown maturity throughout the day and shown how much it means to win. At times, we were behind this game. Massive credit to our bowlers who got the tail out cheaply. Else you'd add 50-60 to the target which would be a different game. We saw Crawley do well last game vs Zim, he played well and was calm. Respected good balls and put the bad ones away. Bumrah's world-class, he was superb in the first inns. To limit his impact was massive. We played him very well today. (Reverses vs Jadeja) Tough to play him with a straight bat, it's a shot I go to a lot. Sometimes to get to the other end, later in the innings for boundaries. At the start of the last partnership, it was a different game had they gotten a wicket, but Root there being calm kept us calm. Smith taking us home at the end was amazing.

Sampath's stats: Fifth successful chase of 300+ target in fourth-innings in Tests at Leeds. Only venue with more than two such chases is Durban's Kingsmead with three.

Most target runs successfully chased on the last scheduled day of a Test match: 404 - AUS vs ENG, Leeds, 1948 (Day 5) 350 - ENG vs IND, Leeds, 2025 (Day 5) 345 - WI vs NZ, Auckland, 1969 (Day 4) 342 - WI vs ENG, Lord's, 1984 (Day 5) 324 - IND vs AUS, Gabba, 2021 (Day 5)

Hiruja: "Havent heard from the "England bottled it at the toss" professors in a while
all good?" From Namooh: England now have won all of their last 6 tests at Headingley, all while batting second

Srini: "India should really be gutted with this loss. So many opportunities. So many mistakes. Sublime cricket balanced with village stuff. "

Tom: "And the best thing is we get to do this 4 more times!"

Anirudh: "This is going to be a loooong series for India...."

6:27pm: 378 for 3 in Edgbaston and now 373 for 5 here - Bazball's done it again against India. So much expected from the final day, Duckett shrugged it all off and took India's strike bowlers out of the equation. He was measured alongside Crawley, perhaps signs of England's ethos changing. Krishna and Thakur came to the fore belatedly, so did Jadeja to keep the jeopardy open after Duckett fell for 149. But Root, first with Stokes and then with Smith, kept India at bay.
