5:55 pm South Africa scored an imposing total of 352 runs, with significant performances from the top and middle orders. But the innings were not without controversy, as on-field tensions between the two sides grew. South Africa chose to bat first and lost opener Tony de Zorzi early on, but recovered well thanks to a 119-run stand between skipper Temba Bavuma (82 off 96) and Matthew Breetzke (83 off 84). The pair played beautiful strokes and punished wayward deliveries, confounding Pakistani bowlers who struggled to make a breakthrough. The irritation quickly escalated into on-field altercations. Naseem Shah sought to disturb Bavuma with comments, but the South African skipper stayed calm. Shaheen Shah Afridi then exacerbated the situation by intentionally obstructing Breetzke's path during a rapid single, resulting in a slight collision at the non-striker's end. The incident had both players trading words, with Pakistani fielders encircling Breetzke in an intense dispute. The umpires and team captains had to intervene on multiple occasions to diffuse the issue, but Shaheen continued to impede Breetzke's running paths, prompting more cautions from the authorities. Bavuma's dismissal, a run-out due to a misunderstanding with Breetzke, was met with hostile celebrations by the Pakistani fielders, with many players, especially Salman Agha and Khushdil Shah, racing towards him and momentarily blocking his path as he walked back. Despite the heated times, South Africa kept command of the innings. Heinrich Klaasen's counter-attacking 87 off 56 balls supplied the late acceleration, while Kyle Verreynne stayed unbeaten on 44 off 32 to bring the total above 350. Pakistan's bowling squad struggled with execution and discipline. Shaheen Shah Afridi was the pick of the bowlers, ending with 2 wickets, whilst Naseem and Khushdil contributed one wicket apiece. However, fielding errors and inconsistent bowling enabled South Africa to set the terms for most of the innings. Please join us for the second innings following the break!
Heinrich Klaasen: "So today, the foundation was there for me, and then I could have pulled the trigger, so it's a lot of time in Dne Day cricket that's why you can just take your time a little bit and just start. We played here before in Covid time, and I know it's quite skiddy here. And the wicket was quite good, but not out of a lot in it for the seamers' point of view, they got a little bit to reverse at night, which was nice to see for us, and hopefully, we can get the ball to go as well. If you have a good start to the Innings, you always look to get close to 400 on the start that we had, but we lost a little bit of momentum just before that last bar of play, and when we looked to take the game on, which is normal. We came up with the game plan, especially with the start we had."
