6.14pm And with that, Marsh pootles over to collect the series trophy in a rather echoey indoor school. Not the most high-profile end to a low-profile visit, but a win is a win, and Australia's world champions were very good value for their three successes out of five.

That, then, is a wrap from this England "summer"... It's not been the most remarkable of all time, but it's had its moments, and at least it ended in a result, albeit by the skin of Frank Duckworth's teeth. Next stop, it's back to the Test boys in [checks notes] next week's tour of Pakistan! Grief, there's no rest in this itinerary is there... and even before that match in Multan begins, the Women's T20 World Cup gets underway this week. All the cricket, all the time! From Miller, Gnasher, Vish, Alan, Matt, Valkerie, Paul and the assorted team, thanks and goodbye!

6pm And that is the end of that. No chance of a mop-up before 7pm. Time for some presentations.

Travis Head is Player of the Series: "Joking about death bowling with Hazlewood... going to Galle in a couple of months time, so keeping my loads up. Pleased to get off to the start I did [with 154*], would have liked one more big score, but winning the series is a great achievement. Consistent and relaxed as I can be, it's a great environment. We've played quite well for the past... forever really. So get everyone on deck for the Champions Trophy."

Harry Brook is the PCA player of the summer. "Nice to get some runs and contribute to some wins, and get the tempo of ODI cricket. We're looking long-term towards world competitions and bigger series, a new brand of cricket, trying to be entertaining, looked to take wickets throughout. Duckie opening the batting has been unbelievable, Smudge [Smith] putting pressure on Zampa... haven't got wickets in the powerplay but outside Rash is world-class. Captaincy has been ... good? Something I might want to do, but I've leave Jos to it for now. We're trying to play similar brand to the boys in Test cricket with Baz and Stokesy."

Mitchell Marsh: "They were on track for a big total, so to pull them back 8 for 100 was a fantastic effort. Allrounders has been a trend in white-ball cricket, long may it continue. Five ODIs in 12 days is a challenge, but we were calm and present with the XIs we had. Some experienced cricketers led the way, been a great few weeks. Trophies are hard to win, we look forward to Pakistan in a few month's time."

5.33pm No news is no news, which I think I already said but I seem to have zapped my non-update due to having too many windows open ... it's probably randomly added in the link-text of a County Championship report...

Anyhow, it is bleak out there, and the covers are firmly in place.

7pm is the official cut-off time. We might get a mercy killing before then if it's clear there's no hope of a clean-up.

Murugan: "Poor tactics from England. They should kept bowling wide after 19.5 overs so that rain would have come and game will be called off. Game awareness!!" They tried the spurious boot change, and the recalling of the quicks to string out the overs... they even tried serving up half-trackers in a bid for a lost ball (or maybe that's my reading of it, anyway!) It's probably fair to state that we have a worthy winner awaiting!

4.59pm And, sure enough, back come the covers. As you were... inspection is off!

4.53pm The groundstaff are out there working on the covers, which is interesting. The main sheets are being drawn back. Not all hope has been lost at Bristol. Maybe the wind has pushed the clouds past for now... plenty more where they came from, I fear!

Inspection at 5.10pm, restart at 5.30pm if no further rain... but there will be, so meh... 5.24pm No news is no news. Covers still wedged in place. Clouds still rolling across. It's bleakness squared out there.

4.51pm It's not just Australia who are getting their hands on a trophy today. Congratulations to Surrey for completing their three-peat in the County Championship. Essex made them work for their champagne at Chelmsford, but the title was already in the bag from the last round of games.

4.46pm It is predictably bleak out there. Heavy sheeting down now and seemingly more to come. Windy, dank, wet. Cold. Autumnal. It's nearly October, what did we expect!

Arthur: "With the benefit of hindsight, 4 overs of spin probably have given the Aussies the win. If England had bowled pace only, they'd still be under 20 overs."

Still, Australia have been the better side for most of this ODI series, so assuming this is curtains, they are very worthy of their 3-2 series win. The DLS par score, incidentally, is 116 for 2 after 20.4 overs, so they aren't just ahead of it, they are miles ahead of it!

4.30pm Rain stops play! Incredible, it's been threatening all innings and now here it comes, four balls after the mandatory 20-over mark had been passed to constitute a game. And I strongly doubt we'll be back out there now... the tension has been extraordinary!
