4.27pm Innings break England all out for 283. Not sure either side would be entirely satisfied with that but both would feel it is a decent result in some ways. Australia dropped five catches and conceded more than five runs per over after winning the toss in superb bowling conditions. England were 184 for 3 and lost 7 for 99. Harry Brook was the star with 85 although he was dropped by Carey on 5. Moeen Ali, Chris Woakes, Mark Wood and the two openers all made starts without kicking on. Batting looked challenging at times but there was value for shots. England will be very pleased to get nearly two hours to bowl tonight. Big challenge coming for Australia's openers.

Sampath Bandarupalli: Teams batting 50-plus overs since June 2022 at a run-rate of 5 and more in Tests: England - 12 times, The rest - once.

Tom: "It's 283, but round it up to 300 for moral/entertainment value."

Simon B: "Welp. From 183/3, I'll take it. But so many misses! England will get their chances to set up the game, it'll be interesting to see if they can hold onto them!"

Jabba: "Feels like England are 40-50 short but I'd love Broady and especially Jimmy to prove me wrong."

Starc to Woakes, OUT, holes out to wide fine leg! Good catch by Head. Short ball follows Woakes outside leg, he's cramped as he pulls, top edge flies all the way to the rope but doesn't clear it and Head takes the catch well.

Starc to Woakes, FOUR, cut brilliantly between deep point and wide third! Murphy maybe should have got there but he just hesitated looking at Khawaja as they came together. Short and wide, he times the cut superbly into the gap

Starc to Woakes, SIX, towering strike down the ground! Full and in the slot on a fourth stump line, he clears the front leg and launches it straight down the ground.

Starc stays around to Woakes. Two slips and a gully still
