8:26pm Jatinder Singh almost retired from cricket in June 2024 due to an injury. But here he is now, leading Oman into their maiden Asia Cup, hoping to cause an upset or two. Shashank Kishore pens down his story of recovery in the build-up to Oman's opener, and it is the perfect read during this innings break.

8:19pm A strange innings, given the approach Pakistan would have wanted to follow and what they ended up doing. Haris was promoted to No.3 and he provided all the impetus and the big hits towards the end of the powerplay and during the middle overs. Farhan, though, struggled for rhythm throughout, as did most of the other batters, barring Mohammad Nawaz.

Oman will be pretty happy with this effort. At the half-way stage, it seemed Pakistan would push towards 200 but Oman applied the brakes post the drinks break, and did not relent, with their death-bowling also quite tidy, barring the odd over. This will still take some chasing, considering this is a slightly sluggish and two-paced surface and given Pakistan's bowling quality. But Oman have given themselves a shot at it. Join us in a bit for the chase!

Mohammad Nadeem to Shaheen Shah Afridi, 2 runs, low full toss just outside off. Shaheen winds up and drills it down the ground towards long off. Fakhar charges back for the second and makes it, meaning Pakistan finish bang on 160!

Shaheen on strike

Mohammad Nadeem to Faheem Ashraf, OUT, another full toss, and another Pakistan batter falls to it! Seems like a pretty good plan this. Anyway. This was another slower ball, ending up as a loopy and dipping waist-high full toss on middle and off. Faheem swipes at it but does not generate the power he wants. Deep square leg circles under it and makes no mistake. There is a check for a waist-high No ball but the third umpire is happy with it eventually!

Mohammad Nadeem to Faheem Ashraf, 2 runs, skied, but it lands right between two fielders! Slot ball just outside off. Faheem plants his front foot and cuts across it. The ball goes a mile up but lands in between extra cover running back and long off running in

2
Mohammad Nadeem to Faheem Ashraf, 2 runs, full and wide outside off again. This one lands and Faheem, swishing at it with all his might, slices it over backward point. The ball plugs in the outfield and Kaleem can cut it off
19.2
4
Mohammad Nadeem to Faheem Ashraf, FOUR, Faheem is up and running instantly! This is a wide full toss, with the idea perhaps being to bowl a wide yorker. Faheem cashes in on the error and carves it over backward point!

Faheem on strike

1
Mohammad Nadeem to Fakhar Zaman, 1 run, sharp work at short fine leg! Slower low full toss just outside off. Fakhar gets down on the scoop and then has breakfast and lunch before the ball arrives. Laps it towards short fine leg, where Shrivastava lunges to his left and stops a certain boundary!

Mohammad Nadeem to Fakhar Zaman, 1 wide, full toss speared way outside off. Fakhar lets it go and the umpire has to indulge in some more exercise

Hassnain to bowl the 20th. Fakhar on strike. Can Pakistan get to 160 and beyond? Well, change of plan because Hassnain seems to be struggling with a bout of cramp. Over to Nadeem. Over the wicket

Shah Faisal to Mohammad Nawaz, OUT, caught at long off, and Faisal ends his spell with his third wicket! Zipped in full outside off and this is there to be hit. Nawaz, though, just slices across it a little too much. Arrows it towards long off, who runs in off the fence and completes the catch well inside it. Nawaz departs after a brief cameo!

Shah Faisal to Mohammad Nawaz, no run, Oman go up in appeal, but the umpire is unmoved! And Jatinder reviews, in his slightly animated style! Sharp short ball on middle and leg, and this seems to climb through. Gets big on Nawaz and he takes his eyes of it too as he looks to pull. Seems to miss it but Oman are convinced he has gotten a scratch on this. Flat line on UltraEdge when the ball is next to the bat, with the noise coming when the ball grazes the back shoulder. Nawaz stays!

4
Shah Faisal to Mohammad Nawaz, FOUR, Nawaz finds the fence again! Misses the leg-stump yorker on the fuller side and Nawaz capitalizes. Not the cleanest connection but he muscles it away behind square, beating the sweeper at deep square leg to his left!

Kasinathan: "Why not Nadeem. Very economical in his spell." -- He might bowl the 20th, although that would still mean he does not finish his quota...

1
Shah Faisal to Fakhar Zaman, 1 run, into the blockhole outside off. Fakhar cannot get under this and clinks it towards long on
18.2
2
Shah Faisal to Fakhar Zaman, 2 runs, off-pace and into the track outside off. Takes an eternity to arrive and when it does, Fakhar swats it towards deep mid wicket for a brace

George: "Some poor batting by Pakistan. Giving away wickets. So far the Asia Cup has been underwhelming with the matches being in favour of the bowlers. Pitches should also allow the batsmen to get run on it. " -- Don't think this is a bad surface per se. Batting has been tougher than it would be on a flat track, but as Haris showed, there are runs to be had!

1
Shah Faisal to Mohammad Nawaz, 1 run, right in the blockhole just outside off. Nawaz jams down on it and squeezes it out into the on side

2
Hassnain Shah to Fakhar Zaman, 2 runs, safe! Length ball outside off and this seems to just stand up a shade. Fakhar miscues it as he looks to go inside out and gets it just over extra cover

Nawaz seems to have done himself some mischief and looked in some discomfort as he completed that single

17.4
1
Hassnain Shah to Mohammad Nawaz, 1 run, slower ball on a full length wide outside off. Nawaz throws his hands at it and drills it towards backward point
17.3
4
Hassnain Shah to Mohammad Nawaz, FOUR, change of angle makes no difference to Nawaz! Back of a length just outside off. Nawaz shuffles across his stumps early and then laps it neatly between the keeper and short fine!

Hassnain Shah to Mohammad Nawaz, FOUR, shot! Back of a length on off stump. Nawaz gives himself room, stands tall and scorches it past extra cover. That flew off the bat!

Hassnain Shah to Mohammad Nawaz, no run, length ball on the pads. Nawaz plays all over it and the ball pings into his pads. Hassnain goes up in appeal, but he is met by a smile from the umpire. That pitched well outside leg

4
Shah Faisal to Mohammad Nawaz, FOUR, off the mark in style! This is short and wide, and Nawaz could not have asked for a better ball to get underway. Throws the kitchen sink at it and knifes it behind point!

Mohammad Nawaz replaces Hasan Nawaz

W
Shah Faisal to Hasan Nawaz, OUT, holes out to sweeper cover, and Oman keep chipping away! This is incredibly slow and wide outside off. Dips on the batter late as well and Nawaz, trying to go inside-out, does not have the pace to work with. He chances his arm nevertheless but comes up second-best, with Hassnain snaring the chance right on the fence. Another very patchy innings by a Pakistan batter, and they are in severe need of impetus here!
