  • Shardul Thakur40 (38b)
  • Sisanda Magala7-0-64-1
  • Lungi Ngidi8-0-35-0

One stat to chew on, courtesy stats whiz Sampath: This is only the 18th instance in all ODIs of a team bowling 50 overs without a single bowler completing his full quota of 10.

2.26pm: An excellent stand between Shardul and Ashwin has taken India to 287. Not too far off from South Africa's 296 in the first game. At various points in their innings, India looked like they would get much less than they got, and much more than they got too. In the end, they'll be quite satisfied by 287. It gives the bowlers a cushion to bowl at. Rishabh Pant sparkled brightest for India, and when he was there even 350 seemed in reach. For South Africa, the spinners did the job, Markram taking 1 for 34 in eight, Maharaj 1 for 52 in nine and Shamsi 2 for 57 in nine. The latter two went for a few runs at the end, but their wickets were crucial. Remember, this is the same pitch on which the first ODI was played, so there's going to be some wear and tear for India's spinners to work with. We'll be back with the chase shortly, don't go anywhere.

Pribin: "India manages to get decent score. Thanks to Ashwin and Shardul at the tail. But remember this may not happen always, India need to work on their middle order"

Jaco: "Nigidi left with two overs unbowled? Seems a bit of a gaffe to me. Would have made much more sense to let him bowl more at the death." --- in hindsight yes, but the spinners had been keeping it so tight, I wouldn't fault Temba too much for sticking with them.

Magala to Ashwin, FOUR, super shot to finish. Ashwin stays deep in his crease, and uses his long reach and impeccable timing to drive this over extra cover and into the boundary. Full ball outside off, he was off balance but his timing was superb.

Magala to Ashwin, 2 runs, was going across his stumps, Magala slipped in the slower yorker on leg stump, Ashwin does well to adjust and flick it off his toes forward of square

Magala to Thakur, 1 run, another low full toss, he can't quite time it, as he slaps it through cover
49.3
2
Magala to Thakur, 2 runs, low full toss on off, and Shardul has moved across his stumps to whip it powerfully off his pads. Good work in the deep by long-on to slide and stop to his right, and then flick the ball to the man running in from deep square leg

Magala to Ashwin, 1 run, yorker outside off, Ashwin went really deep in his crease, gets bat flat on the ground to steer to point

Magala to Thakur, 1 run, scoops the free hit straight to short fine leg, to a full ball outside off by going across. Caught by Ngidi but not out of course since it's a free hit

Magala to Thakur, (no ball) 2 runs, superb first ball, yorker on off stump, squirted off the toe-end through midwicket. And excellent running by these two to steal a second. The fielder had to run in and collect which allowed just enough time. Magala has over-stepped too, so free hit coming up

Rahul: "Let the lord get another half century..He deserves those milestones.Guy's been relentlessly saving us overseas!!Hail Lord!!" --- he has 16 to get. not impossible but difficult. He'll have Magala to face to do it.

Ngidi to Ashwin, 2 runs, dow nthe track this time and gets bat on it with a nicely timed cover-drive that's almost a slap. It's to the biggers side of the boundary so they can sprint two. Shardul will take strike for the final over

Ngidi to Ashwin, no run, stays still this time and is seeking the wide but this is excellent bowling by Ngidi. He kept it full and wide outside off, but inside the tramline

Ngidi to Ashwin, no run, stayed still that time but Ngidi kept it on a sixth stump line as opposed to just insde the tramline of the previous two balls, and he got it back of a length and rising. Ashwin can't connect with the cut
