4.53pm The interval has been extended by five minutes due to the heat, and the ECB have released a statement too, given some concerns - including Matt Potts' extended absence from the field:

"Given today's extreme heat, we are keeping the welfare of spectators and players under constant review. We are providing regular information to the crowd about keeping hydrated and finding shade, and have brought in additional support to help anyone who is unwell. Extra drinks breaks have been added for the players. We continue to monitor the situation closely."

4.49pm Well, that was tough going. A magnificent, career-best 133 from Rassie van der Dussen has underpinned South Africa's highest total in ODIs in England... but they'll feel they left a few runs out there. England stuck to their task, in spite of their lack of rewards.

Janneman Malan: "South Africans are used to this weather but it felt like an oven. We knew the first ten overs might be potential to score some runs, me and Rassie, he was in a good space, he carried that partnership. The square boundary is very big and the bounce is up and down. But it's a good wicket. Lovely being here with a full crowd. I back ourselves to bowl well and bowl smart."

Highest men's ODI totals without a six:
345/8 - Sri Lanka vs West Indies, Hambantota 2020 333/5 - South Africa vs England, Chester-le-Street 2022 333/6 - England vs Australia, Sydney 2011

Carse to Miller, no run, slower ball, very cunningly bowled, skitters through to the keeper, and that's an imposing total for SA

Carse to Miller, no run, jammed down into the pitch, this is excellent restrictive bowling, no chance of a burgled single there

"Potts is feeling better and will be able to bat," say the ECB

Carse to Miller, FOUR, low full toss, but Stokes at long-on is too wide to cut off the boundary. Possibly his final act in an ODI fielding stint, and he ends up in a sprawled heap

Carse to Miller, 2 runs, outside off, back of a length, clubbed hard to the leg-side sweeper. South Africa have their highest score in an ODI in England

Carse to Klaasen, OUT, hacked straight down the throat of long-on! Put the pace back on this time, but hit the pitch hard and Klaasen's slog through the line has no timing whatsoever. Roy steadies himself, and this is a good finish to their fielding stint

Carse to Klaasen, no run, outside off, pace off, attempted reverse slap through third man, but can't make contact

Right, it's been hard yakka for England but the end is nigh. Carse has put in a shift, what can he limit SA to here?

Curran to Miller, FOUR, another cheeky cuff behind square! It's another under-edge, but through third man, not fine leg this time. Three streaky boundaries, but look in the scorebook!

Big final ball
