What an odd innings - one that became completely deflated since Chadwick Walton got out with 19 balls to go. Gladiators could manage only 18 runs in that period, as Jayasuriya struggled to connect with his big shots, and his partner Lakshan was only slightly better.

Gunathilaka was excellent again at the top of the order, but got out taking on Wanindu Hasaranga - whom he might have been better off seeing off. Azam Khan and Walton produced a couple of good cameos.

Stallions will be happy with this target. Hasaranga went for 15 in one over, but still managed to finish with figures of 2 for 29. Dhananjaya de Silva took 1 for 27 and, Malik was outstanding against the struggling finishers, giving away only 17 in his three overs at the death.

We'll be back in a bit with the chase.

Shoaib Malik to Lakshan, FOUR, finally, a solid connection. This is flatter and fired in as well, and Lakshan plays a big slog sweep to split the long on and deep midwicket fielders

Shoaib Malik to Jayasuriya, 1 run, fired into his toes and Jayasuriya tries to bludgeon that towards deep midwicket. Only manages to get a toe-end of the bat to it, and it goes to short fine leg

Shoaib Malik to Jayasuriya, no run, another big swing and miss. Gladiators seriously running out of steam in these last overs. This is tossed up slowly, a straighter one going on with the arm, angled into Jayasuriya. He is through this shot early I think and there's even an appeal for a stumping, but he never raised his foot out of the crease

Malik is back to bowl the last.

Usman Shinwari to Lakshan, no run, another big heave, and another big miss, against another slower ball I think. This is fuller and pitched outside off. Lakshan collects fresh air and it passes under his bat and bounces through to the keeper. Only nine runs off the last two overs

Usman Shinwari to Lakshan, no run, slower ball, full outside off. Lakshan tries to smear it to leg but misses. Through the shot too early

Usman Shinwari to Lakshan, FOUR, lovely shot from Lakshan. this is length on the stumps, and he backs away and punches it aerially with a high elbow, into empty space between cover and long off. One-bounce four. Sweetly timed

Lakwin: "@Dilmith -- will have to agree and disagree with you. I think playing both will leave us an all-rounder at No 6, which will be tricky once we are in tricky chases. I think the all-rounder should play at No 7, and as of now it should be Shanaka, as he is a batting all-rounder and a more dependable batsman, and a prospect for the future."

Usman Shinwari to Jayasuriya, 1 run, full and wide of off stump. Jayasuriya drags it down to long on for a single. Slower ball I think

Dilmith Weerasi: "I think both Thisara and Shanaka can be part of the same starting XI. Sri Lanka's problems lie in the bowling department. There is a lack of a genuine wicket taking bowler when Malinga retires from T20. Kumara, Pradeep and Hasaranga are the main bowlers I'd say. "

They desperately need one of Dushmantha Chameera or Lahiru Kumara to develop some good death bowling skills.

Here's Shoaib Malik.

Dhananjaya Lakshan is in to play his first innings of the tournament.

Usman Shinwari to Walton, OUT, gone now. Shinwari gets a little bit of revenge. This is full and well wide of off stump. Walton tires to launch this back over the bowler's head, and gets a thick outside edge that Tom Moores takes care of behind the stumps. Another fine cameo for Gladiators, but they could have done with Walton batting on for a couple more overs.

Usman Shinwari to Walton, 2 runs, knee-high full toss wide of off, and that's bludgeoned to wide long on, where the fielder runs across and makes a good stop. Wanindu is the man out there

Usman Shinwari to Walton, FOUR, pre-meditated scoop and though he got into a slightly tricky position, was good enough to pull it off. Shinwari goes full and wide of off stump, but Walton shuffles way across and commits to the shot. Ends up shoveling it high into the air, over his shoulder. Lands fine of dep square leg and goes into the boundary

Usman Shinwari to Walton, SIX, walloped. That made a beautiful sound off the bat. This is back of a length outside off stump, and Walton gets on the back foot and clubs it high and hard over cow corner for six. Gladiators' death-overs charge has begun

Usman Shinwari to Walton, (no ball) SIX, no ball to start, and that's been tonked for six as well. Shinwari is around the wicket, and he's bowled a short ball, chest-high at Walton, who gets on the front foot and pulls it imperiously over deep square leg for six. Connected beautifully with that one

Danish: "I'd say Thisara's biggest competitors for a spot in Sri Lanka's national side are Dasun Shanaka and Angelo Matthews. He's been making a statement here that his spot is solidified and not up for grabs at all. Loving it." I think Mathews is almost certain to play for an SL side (much longer track record of good performances than Thisara). The challenge for Thisara is to keep this level of performance going. He has these incredibly hot streaks where his bowling, batting and fielding are all exceptional. But there have been long, cold patches as well.

But it's fantastic for SL to have this kind of competition for the allrounder's spot. Shanaka's been good for Dambulla Viiking as well.

Shinwari to bowl his third over.
