For the moment, this is a key audition for final places for the Indian top order for the first Test, one would imagine. A big performance here can sway the management to go with any player whose place is still a bit tentative, especially given how difficult it was to bat yesterday

2.14 pm One development we can confirm is that Harry Conway too has been ruled out of this three-day match due to concussion following a blow to the head that he took when facing the Indian fast bowlers late on Day 1. His concussion sub will be Mark Steketee

10.53 pm And that is stumps. What an entertaining day of play at the SCG! India winning the toss and opting to bat, and the way they took off, especially Shubman Gill and Prithvi Shaw for the second wicket, it seemed like India were more in white-ball mode than preparing for the pink ball. But Australia A's seamers struck back, and then it needed a career-best first-class effort from Jasprit Bumrah to yank them to a total of somewhat respectability. And the Indian bowlers have simply been superb. They have picked wickets are regular intervals, and only Alex Carey was able to stave them off for any length of time. A late rearguard from Conway took them past the 100 mark, but India hold the aces going into the second day. Another opportunity for the top order to make an impression, and it will come rather more quickly than what anybody could have anticipated. Join us for day two of this tour match on Saturday.
