And that's stumps on a ridiculous day of Test cricket that has seen 19 wickets fall. England end in control having been rumbled for 172 with Mitchell Starc taking 7 for 58 but Australia are still 49 runs behind. The visiting quicks responded magnificently on a pitch offering help, exposing a number of cracks in the Australia batting order. Jofra Archer set the tone, Brydon Carse got key wickets then Ben Stokes bagged five. Harry Brook made the one half-century of the day and England were 160 for 5 when him and Jamie Smith were getting going. Starc, who had claimed a wicket in the first over of the series, carried the Australia attack while debutant Brendan Doggett played his part but Scott Boland went for six an over. Australia then had to change their batting because Usman Khawaja had been off the field, and Archer struck second ball. It's been breathless stuff all the way. What will tomorrow bring? We know how England will play, so this game will likely continue in fast forward.

Brydon Carse "What a day. Everyone that's come to watch today had got their money's worth with 19 wickets. But fantastic last session there from everyone, to put us in a really strong position. Ben Stokes, look, he's amazing. You know his character and his resilience is everything that this team strives to be. And obviously a game changing spell there in that session. As we've seen all day, there's enough assistance there with the pace and the bounce and I was just trying to hit the wicket as hard as I could throughout the day. And there were obviously a couple of balls in there that I was pretty delighted with. It's always nice to get one of the best players in the world out."

And here's Sampath: 19 wickets at Perth today are the most to fall on the opening day of an Ashes series. Previous most were 18 wickets on the first day of the one-off Test in 1888 at Sydney and also on the first day of the 3-match series in 1896 at Lord's.

Right, on that note, I'm going to wrap things up for today. They'll be plenty of reaction and analysis to come from Vish, Matt, Alex and Tristan over the next few hours. From Gnasher and Miller it's goodbye and see you again tomorrow.

What a remarkable moment on a remarkable day. Stokes salutes the crowd with the ball. Starc was doing that a few hours ago.

Stokes to Boland, OUT, edged, has it carried? England celebrated and Stokes has five! Umpires are going to check this. Short of a length around off stump, regulation edge from Boland but it was dying to Brook. But it's cleanly taken.

Korrie: "As I said before and I hate repeating myself, this will be a 3 day game" Might not make day three!

Can Stokes finish the day with five? Bonkers stuff

Stokes to Carey, OUT, would you believe it?! Carey has ramped this straight to deep third. A short ball from round the wicket, angling in at Carey, he gave himself some room and upper cut over the slips, picking out the fielder on the rope
