6.22 pm Since it's past 6pm and with just 8 minutes to go in the extra half hour, that will be stumps on day one at Old Trafford.

Who's had the better day? India aren't in too shabby a position at 264 for 4, but so much depends on the outcomes of the scans of Pant's foot. For those who missed it, he was struck flush on the shoe while trying to reverse sweep Chris Woakes, and there was a nasty swelling on the outside of his right foot. India will fervently hope that he recovers in time to bat again in the first innings. But if he can't then England will feel they can wrap India up for not that much more tomorrow, with the second new ball immediately available.

Curiously, we have had absolutely no problems with the quality of the Dukes ball today.

Abhishek: "Stokes had once again made a mess by opting to field first . Clearly not a 264-4 pitch...Indias day clearly. England will face problem facing 6 Indian genuine bowlers."

Bhargav: "Would say honours are shared after the first day. India's day if Pant was still at the crease."

Nazeer: "If Pant can't bat anymore in this test, can Jurel come in as concussion sub?" Umm no, because it isn't a concussion.

Thank you for all your emails today, Andrew Miller and I will be back tomorrow for what promises to be another gripping day's cricket, weather permitting in Manchester! Cheers
