2:14pm The players are out. We're ready for the final session.

Tea break reading: It was India's National Sports Day a couple of days ago, and as always, Dhyan Chand's birth anniversary was marked with the sports awards, and the usual debates over names included and excluded from the list. With the Olympics less than a year away, Sharda Ugra pens a poignant letter to budding athletes who will hone their skills in time for Paris 2024. Real champions don't sulk, she writes. Instead, they last forever.

1.55 pm: India have ended up with an above-par first-innings score. West Indies had won the toss and there was juice in the pitch, but a combination of wayward bowling early on and application by the Indian batsmen negated that advantage. The match was on a fairly even keel overnight, but Hanuma Vihari steered India into safe waters. He had a somewhat unexpected ally in Ishant Sharma, whose maiden half-century almost delighted his team-mates more than it did himself. Jason Holder was lion-hearted for West Indies and was rewarded with a five-for, but it's up to the West Indies batsmen now to respond to India's total in kind.

Holder to Vihari, OUT, that's five for Holder in the innings and 100 wickets in Test cricket. Deserved to finish off the innings, he's been tireless and on target through the innings. This was bowled fuller and angling into Vihari, who made room to try and loft it over extra cover. Ends up getting a leading edge that is pouched comfortably by mid-off. End of a fine innings.

Holder back on to try and finish the innings off.

Saravanakumar G: "Ishant just missed his hundred by 43 runs. Kohli should declare the innings now :)"

Cornwall to Mohammed Shami, OUT, caught behind. Great catch and good ball. Gets it to bounce outside off, and Shami is going for the cut, but he hasn't judged the bounce at all. Gets a top edge that is well held by the keeper. Both Test debutants combining for a wicket there.

What an innings from Ishant. It's probably secured him the spot above Shami in the batting order for good.

Brathwaite to Sharma, OUT, holes out to deep midwicket. Ishant's adventure ends. Steps down the track and gets to the pitch of the ball, lofts this and connects well, but straight to the fielder. Standing ovation from the team as he walks back
