3.45pm Hello one and all. The verdict seems to be that New Zealand are a good 15 runs short of par, but I have a sneaking suspicion that isn't the worst score - 160 is about right at Hagley Oval, and this chase won't be a complete doddle.

3.42pm Right, as mentioned, Matt Roller is utterly gagging to get his winter properly underway. He'll be right here, right now for the resumption.

3.40pm James McCaghrey: "Brown showing what he's in for, magnificent death bowling, on debut, imagine him, Jofra and Jordan bowling togethor" Indeed... it's a tasty prospect when England get their full strength team back. But then again, it's only half a match at the start of a long run-in to the T20 World Cup... let's curb our enthusiasm for now ...

Kapil Baldawa: "Ridiculous batting in the last over by Mitchell. Length balls entire over and he couldn't put away a single one. Not sure that the mind set is by NZ. Poor start n ordinary finish. Kuggelejin should have come ahead of Santner who can at best dink 1s and 2s" There was a surfeit of caution, I felt. But then again, that's how they played the 50-over World Cup too.. gauge a pitch early, and get just enough runs to defend...

3.38pm So, England have restricted New Zealand to 153 in the first innings of the winter. It feels like a good effort, but in spite of the apparently clement conditions, the ball seemed hard to line up today. A slightly two-paced wicket, or excellent tricksy bowling? We'll find out soon enough...

Brown to Mitchell, 2 runs, short, pace on the ball this time, and Mitchell is slightly surprised as he top-edges his pull, but short of the man on the rope. That's an exceptional over at the death from the debutant, and England have done the needful in the field.
19.5
1
Brown to Santner, 1 run, an ambitious hack out to backward square, as Brown's improbable trickery just disrupts the timing on impact once again

James McCaghrey: "Surprised Gregory didn't even bowl an over, even if he is there as a death batter, at least give him 1 over" I guess he's a bit like Stokes these days. If England don't use him, their main options are bowling well

1
Brown to Mitchell, 1 run, flinched to the leg side, keeping a tight leash in this final over
19.3
W
Brown to Taylor, OUT, pounded to cow corner, as Taylor fails to line up the cutter, and that's Brown's first international wicket! A big scalp too, as Jonny Bairstow stoops well to gather

LRPL Taylor c Bairstow b Brown 44 (48m 35b 3x4 1x6) SR: 125.71

Vinod Rajpal: "@Andrew....who is your partner for this match...19 overs straight by you...Hope you had at least 2 Coffees !!" Matt Roller is itching to get stuck into the whole of the second innings!

19.2
1
Brown to Mitchell, 1 run, short, but gets away with it as Mitchell gloves a swinging pull
19.1
1
Brown to Taylor, 1 run, a yawning mow across the line, but they miss out on the second run as the ball plugs in space

Jordan to Taylor, SIX, too short, and cracked murderously over midwicket! You can't bowl there to Ross Taylor!
18.3
1
Jordan to Mitchell, 1 run, crunched into the covers again, an athletic intercept on the edge of the circle
18.2
1
Jordan to Taylor, 1 run, pounded hard to deep midwicket, and Vince drops a low chance! It was travelling, but he should have snaffled that, leaning forward
18.1
0
Jordan to Taylor, no run, flashed hard into the covers off a full length, but intercepted on the edge of the ring. A precious dot

TK Curran to Taylor, 1 run, honked across the line, line and length and variation from Curran, putting the ball in the right area but at an indeterminate pace. Midwicket in play once more as a decent set of four overs ends for TKC
17.5
1
TK Curran to Mitchell, 1 run, sat back in the crease, pulling with intent as Curran dropped his length back. Midwicket gathers
17.4
4
TK Curran to Mitchell, FOUR, that's ferocious power! Big backlift, scything drive, hard through the bowler's followthrough as Curran opted to put pace on the ball that time
17.3
1
TK Curran to Taylor, 1 run, bashed out to deep midwicket, this is tidy work from England. New Zealand still not quite daring to cut loose
17.2
1
TK Curran to Mitchell, 1 run, back of the hand from Curran, well directed, full and straight
17.1
1
TK Curran to Taylor, 1 run, flogged high over point, chiselling out the very full length on a fractionally wide line

Jordan to Mitchell, SIX, flipped off the toes! A hit to nothing for Mitchell, with the end of the over looming and wickets in hand. But Jordan strayed just a fraction onto leg stump to aid his decision-making!
16.5
1
Jordan to Taylor, 1 run, back on a better fuller length, settles for the single
16.4
4
Jordan to Taylor, FOUR, misses his mark this time, only fractionally, but Taylor finally had one he could crash through the line. Jordan almost got a hand on it to intercept, as only he can
