Mitchell Santner, the winning captain: "It was a great team performance. That partnership was outstanding. The Proteas put us under pressure in the powerplay but to get to 170 was good. We learnt that taking wickets throughout would help in the second innings. (To get 170+) We were thinking maybe 150-160 was the score we'd get."
Tim Robinson, the POTM, for his unbeaten 75: "Feel great to contribute to a win. We had a rough start but to keep going with Bevon was fun. (Conversation) Credit to the Proteas bowlers when new batters came in. Bevon and I wanted to take it as deep as we could. It was a good wicket and the ball does fly. (Surface) I thought it was a good surface but South Africans used the big side really well. They had their length well, so it was difficult to start. After that you start to trust the wicket."
Rassie van der Dussen, losing captain: "Our bowlers did their part, but we couldn't get it together with the bat. But in saying that there's a certain way we want to play. Got to take the rough with the smooth. That's why these kind of series is there to try new guys. (Halfway stage discussion) Just using the boundaries smartly - short and long boundary. It's often times tough to defend both sides, with twos on offer. It's not a good batting performance but it's not the end of the world. We'll keep trying till we get it right. (Muthusamy's figures) It was brilliant, he didn't have much spin to work with. Brilliant bowler, played with his pace and his line."
Eventually, an easy victory for New Zealand, making a stellar start to their campaign. Rob Walter wins with his new side.
South Africa will be disappointed by the way their batters crumbled even if they were a batter short in the XI today. The century run stand between Robinson and debutant Jacobs also took the sting out of the SA performance in the first innings after their bowlers had reduced NZ to 70 for 5.
Henry and Duffy finish with three-fors with their change of paces and short balls working well. Who should get the POTM award?
Walt: "Robinson for POTM! He gave NZ a total to defend in the first place. "
G Coetzee c Neesham b Henry 17 (24m 16b 2x4 0x6) SR: 106.25

GF Linde c Conway b Duffy 30 (41m 20b 1x4 2x6) SR: 150
Robinson was also impressed by the composure showed by Jacobs in his maiden international game
