11:14am Quite a frantic hour and a half of play. New Zealand began the day in control but then, without any warning or intimation, lost it. Mitchell's run-out triggered that sequence and they were still trailing by a run when nine down. Phillips, though, channeled his T20 beast thereafter, putting the bowlers to the sword and clearing the fence whenever he could, putting together 36 for the last wicket, of which O'Rourke scored none. That has given the Kiwis a nice 35-run cushion, which they will now want to exploit, given how the pitch is behaving.

Sri Lanka, on the other hand, will be quietly pleased with how they came back, although the last-wicket stand did frustrate them. Jayasuriya bowled much better today, as did Ramesh Mendis - the former finishing with four scalps, while the latter bagged three. This game is still not beyond reach (not by any stretch) but they will now have to be at their best with the bat to wipe off the deficit. We will be back shortly with SL's second innings.

RTM Mendis to O'Rourke, OUT, castled, and that will be that for this innings! Fizzed through nicely on a full length outside off. Seems to drift away just a shade and that takes it outside the line O'Rourke is defending. The ball then spins back enough to beat the outside edge and clip the outside of off stump. Muted celebrations from the hosts - they know they have given away too many towards the end, but given where they were at the start of the day, they will not mind conceding just a 35-run lead!

RTM Mendis to Phillips, no run, slides this well down leg. Left alone by Phillips

Ramesh again. Around the wicket. Almost everyone out on the fence. But if Phillips middles it, those fielders might be redundant anyway

Jayasuriya to O'Rourke, no run, full just outside off. Too full from SL's perspective, though. O'Rourke smothers it quite easily

SL are going searching for that last wicket and have lost the consistency that has brought them wickets this morning

Jayasuriya to Phillips, SIX, Phillips continues to make merry! Lobbed up right into Phillips' arc outside off. He transfers his weight forward and smacks it clean over the bowler's head!

Prakash : "This is why lower order doesn't need to score runs but hang on at one end"

Ramesh to continue from around the wicket

Grubb: "Frustrating from NZ. Yet again we squander a potentially matchwinning position with flippant play. Just not learning from our mistakes. In fact, the repetition is so tedious it seems we may not even consider them mistakes. "

RTM Mendis to O'Rourke, 2 runs, dropped - oh dear! Zipped in full just outside off. O'Rourke, without any conviction, prods at it and gets a thick outside edge that goes through DDS at slip. Very presentable chance and the Sri Lankan captain, of all people, has spurned it

One ball for O'Rourke to survive in the over
