10.45am: Job done by South Africa, just a couple of boundaries conceded against Hazlewood's frisky swishing. But how significant will that lead be? We know from the history of Cape Town (and, specifically, these two teams) that a duff third innings can be more significant that a below-par second.

Meanwhile, CA chief executive James Sutherland has delivered a statement on the crowd issues at Newlands: "We are extremely disappointed that a small number of fans have directed such offensive and inappropriate behavour towards our players and members of their families. Our Chairman David Peever, who is in Cape Town, has taken the matter up directly with relevant CSA officials, including President, Chris Nenzani.

"We acknowledge that CSA is taking steps to ensure incidents like those yesterday are not repeated and we have encouraged the strongest possible action in response to such behaviour. People who behave in such a manner should not be welcome at cricket grounds anywhere in the world, and together with the ICC and all member countries, we strongly endorse a zero-tolerance approach to anti-social behaviour by fans."

Rabada to Hazlewood, OUT, got him, steered to first slip! Hazlewood gives Rabada a fourth with a rather deferential fiddle, nicked to slip - and off they go, South Africa taking a handy 56-run lead on first innings (although it could have been a fair bit more)

Rabada to Paine, 1 run, more short stuff and Paine hooks in the air, bounces out towards deep square leg

Here's Jayson Orton: "I hope we don't lose time to rain. It is raining lightly in the south peninsula already..." There have been some murmurs, slightly overcast in Cape Town today

Rabada to Hazlewood, no run, fires in the yorker, but Hazlewood is equal to it! This was full and straight at 143kph, but he gets the bat down and Gandalfs it - "You shall not pass!" - in front of the stumps

Rabada to Hazlewood, no run, round the wicket, slides down the leg side, short delivery and Hazelwood can gets out of the way without drama

Morning, here come the players. Tim Paine has held the fort admirably, but he only has one partner left... and Josh Hazlewood is marking his guard, with Kagis Rabada limbering up to open the bowling this morning. SA will be hoping they aren't out there too long

10.24pm Right, nearly time to restart. Here's Alan Gardner to talk you through the first hour.

Talking of all things Aussie, the Formula One circuit is revving its engine in Melbourne this week. Did Lewis Hamilton succeed in securing pole position? Find out right now on ESPN.co.uk

10.15am Fifteen minutes to go until the resumption. There was also an unsavoury off-field moment yesterday when Dave Warner became embroiled in a heated dispute with a spectator. Cricket Australia have made an official complaint about the incident, after Darren Lehmann branded it "disgraceful"

Chris: "Can't believe the gall of Lehmann to criticise the crowd for abusive behaviour given he was the provocateur-in-chief to get the Aussie crowds to abuse Stuart Broad. Lehmann, Smith, Warner have excelled at hypocrisy. This series will be long remembered as the crowning glory of the Aussie's double-standards." Well... let's see what actually happens to the scoreline first. It's not yet impossible that it will be remembered for Australia extending their proud record of not losing in South Africa since re-admission. But either way, it sounds as though the level of abuse they were subjected yesterday was unsavoury in the extreme.

10am Welcome back to Newlands for a tastily balanced contest. Australia are on the ropes but swinging back hard, mainly through the tail-end feist of Nathan Lyon last night, and now Tim Paine and Josh Hazlewood's task this morning is to edge their team as close as they can to parity.

Some overnight reading (in case you haven't hoovered it all up while the rain was falling in Auckland...) Dan Brettig watched enthralled as Dave Warner and Kagiso Rabada duked it out yesterday morning, and wonders if the nature of the duel said more about the Aussies than the South Africans... and Firdose Moonda salutes Morne Morkel, who has reached 300 Test wickets in his final series.

END OF OVER:

5.55pm Thanks for your comments, have a read of Brydon Coverdale's report before you go, and tune in later for Firdose and Dan's end-of-play analysis. See you tomorrow!

5.50pm So, it's been another gripping and tightly fought day. Good feisty tailend batting from Rabada for South Africa and Lyon for Australia. A gripping cameo with an explosive ending between Rabada and Warner. A fine fifty from Bancroft, 300 wickets for Morkel, and some swing-based scalping from Philander. The upshot is that South Africa have a distinct advantage, but Australia are still brawling, and there's more to come tomorrow.

Pa1: "Tim Paine has answered all his critics who criticised his selection!!" Err... not all of them... here's AcFinor:

"Is Paine playing for the team or trying to boost his average? It's only a matter of time before the last wicket falls. He's got to score as much as he can before that. And this isn't the first time he's played like this. I've got my eye on you Tim!" Harsh, if you ask me. Without his grit, South Africa could have had a 150-plus lead in the bank by stumps.

5.46pm - Bad light stops play... oh honestly, get a grip. What on earth is the matter with these people? Neither team wants to leave, but that will be stumps ...

Morkel to Paine, no run, through to the keeper, as the umpires start to contemplate the light ...

Prashant: "Tim Paine playing as if there are still 5 wickets remaining. If it was QDK batting he would have brought his team close to lead when the number 10 has batted so well." By hook or by crook, Australia want to get to parity. This is his preferred method, and who are we to argue...
