5:15pm That brings us to the end of our coverage for this game. We hope you enjoyed it and would love your company for more cricket lined up today, tomorrow and for the foreseeable future. Until next time, from Chetan, Fidel, Vairavan and myself (Shashwat), this is goodbye!
Harshitha Samarawickrama, the Player of the Match, says that she is very happy that she could contribute to the score and help the team win. Vishmi and Hasini had a good launching pad, and then she and Kavisha Dilhari scored five-odd runs per over. The wicket was a bit slow and they adjusted and adapted to it.
Chamari Athapaththu, Sri Lanka captain: (On the decision to bowl first) We backed our skills and we have an experienced bowling line-up. Madara is bowling really well, we know her potential. The selectors and coaching staff is backing me to make decisions. We have good spinners. I know this track is a bit slow and low, so we decided to go with just one fast bowler. We have good youngsters. Happy to see these young girls, and as a captain, I am really proud of them. I hope these girls play their best cricket in this tournament and the future as well.
Laura Wolvaardt, South Africa captain: We just did not have enough runs on the board. (On the pitch) Ended up being slower and sticky up front and maybe flattened out later. Did not have enough runs on the board and did not bowl well enough in the second half. We just needed to be a bit braver with the bat for longer periods of time and more consistent with the ball. A lot of their runs were scored square of the wicket and that was not where we wanted to bowl. Some of the Sri Lankan girls were bowling really slow and that was hard to get away.
4:57pm At the half-way stage, 235 felt like a competitive total that would challenge Sri Lanka. Then, Athapaththu fell early and the hosts, at that stage, seemed under strife. But the rest of their batting unit stood up, and they stood up in some style. Gunaratne and Perera offset the early departure of their skipper, before the main act, with Samarawickrama and Dilhari as protagonists. Both of them registered half-centuries and found the fence at will during the middle overs, while also rotating strike adeptly. Neither could stick around till the crossing of the finish line, but a 128-run stand was enough to knock South Africa off their stride.
Speaking of South Africa, they made an early inroad, but could not follow it up with more incision. Khaka was uncharacteristically expensive and Klaas, despite picking up a wicket inside the powerplay, did not return to the bowling crease until the 38th over, by which time Sri Lanka had built up a head of steam. Mlaba bagged two scalps, but a failure to consistently pick up wickets let South Africa down.
