Max Redfield, Devin Butler won't suit up for Notre Dame on Friday

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- Notre Dame safety Max Redfield was suspended for violating team rules and sent home ahead of Friday's BattleFrog Fiesta Bowl against Ohio State.

Fighting Irish coach Brian Kelly told reporters Tuesday that Redfield had been disciplined, leaving the secondary without a two-year starter who made 64 tackles this season. No other details about the violation were provided by Kelly, who is preparing No. 8 Notre Dame for a high-profile matchup with No. 7 Ohio State.

"We sent Max Redfield home for violation of team rules," Kelly said. "He will not be with us for the bowl."

Redfield took to Instagram to apologize on Tuesday night for his team violations and said he "will continue to grow and learn from this."

Rules are implemented for a reason and not following them is unacceptable, which I completely understand. Although I was not alone in my 2 incidents of being punctual, I SOLELY take responsibility for my actions. I will continue to grow and learn from this as well as continue to contemplate how to become the absolute best version of me while giving everything I have to make it happen daily. My heart goes out to everyone who is effected or has to hear about this incident to whatever extent. The focus and dedication needed to be great is being better comprehended by me everyday and this situation only helps the realization of exactly what it takes to be the best...what hurts the most is not being able to be with my teammates and not getting to lay everything on the line with some of the people I love the most. I am profoundly sorry.

Senior Matthias Farley, a team captain who played in all 12 games and appeared twice as a starter, is likely to replace Redfield against the Buckeyes and their high-powered offense.

The Irish will have to make another adjustment in the defensive backfield, with junior cornerback Devin Butler injured and out for the Fiesta Bowl after breaking his foot in practice Monday. Butler was an injury replacement himself after taking over for starter KeiVarae Russell, who broke his leg in the penultimate game of the regular season against Boston College.

The loss of both cornerbacks will press sophomore Nick Watkins into the lineup for his first career start for Notre Dame.
