In light of Geno Smith’s broken jaw, Ryan Fitzpatrick is the presumed starting quarterback for the New York Jets, who have had more than their share of issues with quarterbacks.
Fitzpatrick’s credentials
The Elias Sports Bureau says Fitzpatrick’s 89 career starts are the most by an active quarterback who has never started a postseason game.
Also from Elias: Fitzpatrick is the only quarterback who has made his debut since the 1970 NFL-AFL merger to start a game for five teams in his career and fail to post a winning record with any of them.
On the plus side, Fitzpatrick set single-season career highs in 2014 with the Houston Texans in completion percentage, yards per attempt, touchdown-interception ratio and Total QBR. Fitzpatrick went 6-6 starting for the Texans last season.
Repeating history?
The timing and the nature of Smith’s injury – reportedly being sucker-punched by a teammate – are odd, but the Jets are no strangers to unusual or ill-timed incidents with their quarterbacks.
1999: Vinny Testaverde tore his Achilles tendon in the season opener, the season after the Jets reached the AFC Championship Game.
2003: Chad Pennington broke a wrist in a preseason game and missed the first six games of the regular season.
2012: The Jets signed Tim Tebow, who threw eight passes during the season and was released in the next offseason.
2013: Mark Sanchez suffered a season-ending shoulder injury in the fourth quarter of a preseason game.
Top of Jets’ 2013 draft class sidelined
With the injury to Smith, the Jets’ top three picks in the 2013 NFL draft will be out of the lineup for extended periods of time this season.
Cornerback Dee Milliner (picked ninth in the 2013 draft) is expected to miss six to eight weeks in the wake of wrist surgery.
Defensive tackle Sheldon Richardson (the 13th pick in 2013) has been suspended for the first four games of the season.
And Smith, the 39th pick in the 2013 draft, will now miss six to 10 weeks as a result of another Jets quarterback mishap.
