Texas takes its first big step toward building up its 2015 recruiting class under new coach Charlie Strong on Saturday, with the Longhorns’ first junior day of the year.
The Longhorns are reportedly bringing in as many as 70 prospects for unofficial campus visits this weekend, including six committed prospects and more than a dozen ranked in the ESPN 300.
Among those top-ranked recruits expected to attend are quarterback Kevin Dillman (Denton, Texas/Guyer), athlete J.W. Ketchum (Fort Bend, Texas/Marshall), linebacker/end Anthony Wheeler (Dallas/Skyline), linebacker Cameron Townsend (Missouri City, Texas/Ridge Point) and defensive backs Holton Hill (Houston/Lamar) and Xavier Lewis (Reserve, La./East Saint John).
Texas also hosted two ESPN 300 recruits on campus Friday, receiver John Burt (Tallahassee, Fla./Lincoln) and cornerback Kris Boyd (Gilmer, Texas/Gilmer). Both are expected to attend on Saturday as well.
The one-day event will also give Strong and his coaching staff a chance to better get to the recruits who committed to Texas’ previous staff.
Five of those six pledges -- Patrick Vahe (Euless, Texas/Trinity), Connor Lanfear (Buda, Texas/Hays), Jordan Stevenson (Dallas/South Oak Cliff), Jalen Campbell (Corpus Christi, Texas/Flour Bluff) and Johnny Shaw (Orange, Texas/West Orange-Stark) -- are expected to make the trip to Austin this weekend.
Traditionally, Texas junior days have been a boon to start off recruiting classes, an event that can lead to a flurry of pledges – including 13 in one weekend in 2010 – but the Longhorns got started on this class long ago, even hosting its first sophomore day last year.
