Recruit and return: Will Terps lose Trimble, Stone?

We continue our recruit and return series with the Maryland Terrapins, whose season ended Thursday with a loss to Kansas in the Sweet 16. A look at what the 2016-17 season could hold:

Possible 2016-17 starting five (statistics reflect regular-season average)

G: Melo Trimble (14.5 PPG, 5.0 APG)

G: Dion Wiley (injured in 2015-16)

G: Jared Nickens (5.3 PPG, 2.1 RPG)

F: Robert Carter (12.6 PPG, 6.8 RPG)

C: Damonte Dodd (3.1 PPG, 2.9 RPG)

Who is lost: Rasheed Sulaimon (11.0 PPG) and Jake Layman (11.7 PPG) were seniors and are definitely gone. The question is will Melo Trimble and Diamond Stone follow suit. Trimble seemed certain to depart in March/April before the season began, but he struggled at times down the stretch and his stock may have dropped. He's currently listed at No. 48 among NBA prospects in Chad Ford's most recent top 100. Stone, projected as a lottery pick in the same rankings, seems more certain to depart College Park. Sulaimon and Layman were double-figure scorers and good college players who will have a chance of being drafted. All told, the losses could be significant for the Terrapins.

Who is added: Anthony Cowan and Kevin Huerter should both be key contributors as freshmen. Cowan should be in the battle for the starting PG spot if Trimble declares for the draft. Huerter is a versatile wing who can play all three perimeter positions. He could also push for a starting position. Three-star Micah Thomas is a 6-foot-7, 185-pound wing who could be brought along slowly.

What it means for next season: Mark Turgeon may have a rebuilding project on his hands. If Stone and Trimble leave early, others will have to step up. Carter would be the go-to man in that scenario, but others will have to emerge. If Trimble and Stone both return, the Terrapins would be in the Big Ten title hunt, but the odds of both returning seem low.

Trending: Down. But the Terrapins will still have some talent, even if Stone and Trimble both depart. Someone will need to improve and become an impact player to help Carter. There will be some talent there but it will be young.
