We continue our recruit and return series with the Kentucky Wildcats, whose season ended Saturday with a loss to Indiana in the second round. A look at what the 2016-17 season could hold:
Possible 2016-17 starting five (statistics reflect regular-season average)
G: De'Aaron Fox (incoming freshman)
G: Isaiah Briscoe (9.7 PPG, 5.2 RPG)
G: Malik Monk (incoming freshman)
F : Marcus Lee (6.8 PPG, 6.5 RPG, 1.7 BPG)
F/C: Bam Adebayo (incoming freshman)
Who is lost: Forward Alex Poythress is the lone senior, but the Wildcats could easily lose what would have been their entire possible starting five for 2016-17. Guard Jamal Murray, a big-time shooter/scorer with lottery potential, is as good as gone to the NBA. John Calipari announced that point guard Tyler Ulis will turn pro, though it's possible he could reconsider depending on his stock. Chad Ford currently has the 5-9 Ulis at No. 22 in his Top 100 prospects. Skal Labissiere had an up-and-down freshman season and is still very much a work in progress but would likely be a first-round pick based on upside. The most likely returnees from the lineup are point guard Isaiah Briscoe and forward Marcus Lee, both of whom project as second-round pick/undrafted types in this class, according to Ford.
Who is added: Kentucky currently has the nation's No. 1 recruiting class, consisting of four five-star performers starting with ESPN 100 No. 4 PF Bam Adebayo. PG De'Aaron Fox and SG Malik Monk sit at Nos. 7 and No. 8, respectively, in the ESPN 100. Up front, skilled power forward Wenyen Gabriel (No. 15) has not scratched the surface of how good he could become. Four-star power forward Sacha Killeya-Jones is long, athletic and very skilled as well.
What it means for next season: The unknown at this point for Calipari is who stays and who leaves for the NBA, but there's one thing that will not change: The Wildcats will be talented at every position. The question is who fills the roles. Even if players like Ulis and Labissiere opted to come back, giving Kentucky the kind of depth it had when it started 38-0 in 2014-15, it would not be a bad problem to have.
Trending: Up. Talent will once again be plentiful in Lexington. As he always does, Calipari will take his talent, implement a system for them to excel in and create a culture for them to develop great team chemistry. The Wildcats should not miss a beat and figure to factor into the national championship conversation yet again.
