Dallas Nike EYBL recap

DALLAS -- There were many great matchups over the course of the weekend during the third session of the Nike Elite Youth Basketball League. Here is a look at who stood out during the event:

Standout players

Julius Randle (Plano, Texas/Prestonwood)

2013, PF, 6-foot-8, 240 pounds

Before anointing anyone the No. 1 player in the 2013 class, we need to make sure we don’t dismiss Mr. Randle. He is still the most unstoppable force in the class. His game is pure power with just a little finesse mixed in. Randle drives to his left 90 percent of the time, but defenders can’t stop him from doing it. When he is attacking in the paint, no high school player can stop him.

Duane Wilson (Whitefish Bay, Wis./Dominican)

2013, PG/SG, 6-2, 170 pounds

Wilson is the consummate scoring point guard who can score and distribute with equal effectiveness. He is at his best when he is in attack mode, and he has become much more explosive and confident than he was last season. He has turned himself into one of the best guards in the country.

Parker Jackson-Cartwright (Los Angeles/Loyola)

2014, PG, 5-10, 150 pounds

He may not look like it, but he is an assassin on the basketball court. With a small and unassuming frame, he may not pass the immediate look test, then the ball goes up and he takes over. He understands how to control tempo and make his teammates better while scoring at the same time.

Andrew Wiggins (Toronto/Huntington Prep, W.Va.)

2014, SF, 6-7, 190 pounds

This is getting a little monotonous, but Wiggins had a few dominant performances again. He is without question one of the three best talents in all of high school basketball right now. He is very explosive and has really improved the consistency of his jump shot. He may glide at times but now knows when to take over games. Catch him now while you only have to pay $5 to watch him play live; very soon you will have to pay $25.

Stanley Johnson (Santa Ana, Calif./Mater Dei)

2014, SF, 6-6, 225 pounds

He is a very versatile forward who can play every position on the floor. Johnson is strong with a very good basketball IQ and is good at everything, but great at nothing. He has become much more assertive as a scorer, but his best attribute is that he can do whatever his team needs in order to win.

Johnathan Williams III (Memphis, Tenn./Southwind)

2013, PF, 6-9, 215 pounds

He has always been known as a player with talent but did not always show it or play productively. Well, the production is coming pretty fast. Williams was rebounding, blocking shots and scoring inside all weekend. Williams is a lefty inside/outside performer who is shooting up the rankings like a rocket.

Kameron Williams (Baltimore/Mount St. Joseph's)

2013, SG, 6-2, 175 pounds

What separates Williams from many others is that he does not have to get ready to score. He is always ready, which puts pressure on any defense. He is a natural scorer who has range on his jumper and understands how to use a shot fake to create space, if needed. He also does not force up shots and he plays under control with a good sense of pace. One of the leading scorers in the entire EYBL, he holds offers from Miami (Fla.), VCU, Providence, Richmond, Wake Forest, DePaul, Drexel, USF and Virginia Tech.

Underclassmen to watch

Malik Newman (Jackson, Miss./Calloway)

2015, SG/PG, 6-2, 175 pounds

He is already a big-time scoring guard, even though he just finished his freshman season. Right now, Newman is a combo guard who thinks score first and has a nice midrange game that features drives to the lane, floaters and pullups. Overall, he is one of the better talents in the 2015 class.

JaQuan Lyle (Evansville, Ind./Bosse)

2014, PG/SG, 6-4, 175 pounds

Lyle is a point guard with great size, fantastic vision and a solid handle. He is good now and still has a ton of upside.

Alex Robinson (Arlington, Texas/Kennedale)

2014, PG/SG, 6-1, 175 pounds

He is a skilled guard and a dynamic scorer. Robinson is a streaky shooter with range to 25 feet, but is close to a complete package offensively.

Keelon Lawson (Memphis, Tenn./Melrose)

2015, SF, 6-5, 180 pounds

Lawson is a young scorer who loves to slash to the basket and has a knack for putting the ball in the basket. He is one of the better rising 10th-graders in the country.

Alex Owens (Bradenton, Fla./Southeast)

2015, PF, 6-7, 210 pounds

Owens is a big-bodied insider with a lot of tools. He already has a solid face-up game, a developing turnaround jumper and is an advanced shot-blocker for such a young player.

Joel Berry (Orlando, Fla./Lake Highland Prep)

2014, PG, 6-0, 180 pounds

He is a strong, speedy and physical point guard who can keep his defender on his hip and ride him into the lane to score. He can also burn his defender from behind the arc, but he needs to add the all-important middle game (dribble pullups, teardrops, etc.) to his arsenal. Defensively, he guards the ball well and levels the drive by moving his feet. Berry has offers from Kansas, USF and Miami (Fla.).

Dakari Johnson (Montverde, Fla./Academy)

2014, C, 6-11, 260 pounds

Johnson, who looked to have slimmed down, was more athletic and finished very well inside. He has been pretty dominant so far this spring and is one of the best big men in the country, regardless of class.

Breakout performer

Damian Jones (Baton Rouge, La./Scotlandville Magnet)

2013, PF, 6-9, 220 pounds

Jones is at his best around the rim. He can catch a high lob and finish, grab offensive rebounds and block shots naturally. When he learns how to play inside from a low to high stance he will produce at a high rate. He likes Oklahoma, Texas, Oklahoma State, LSU, Tulane, Florida, Vanderbilt and NC State.

Notes

• 2013 wing Darian Harris (Springdale, Ark./Shiloh Christian) and 2013 combo guard Zach Denny (Germantown, Ohio/Valley View) are among the better zone-busters in the class.

• 2013 combo forward Nigel Hayes (Toledo, Ohio/Whitmer) and 2013 PF Jordan Bell (Long Beach, Calif./Poly) can help their teams win without scoring a point. Hayes, the ultimate glue guy, is a great defender, rebounder and passer. Bell is a very good shot-blocker, rebounder and garbageman on the interior.

• There were a few dynamic players from the Class of 2016 present this weekend -- 6-7 wing Dedric Lawson (Memphis, Tenn.) and 7-0 C/PF Thon Maker (New Orleans) are both very skilled for their size and age.

• Fresh off an NHSI championship for Findlay Prep, point guard Nigel Williams-Goss (Happy Valley, Ore./Findlay Prep) was a steady performer and someone who can be trusted to run a team. He recently visited Washington and is a native of Portland, Ore.

"It was really nice to be back in the Northwest," he said. "I have a great relationship with the coaches there over the years."

His school list includes Washington, Harvard, Oklahoma, UNLV, UCLA, Providence and Miami.
