Croatian forward Dario Saric, the No. 12 pick in the 2014 NBA draft, has been saying for a while that it was his desire to join the Philadelphia 76ers this summer after spending the last two years playing in Turkey with Anadolu Efes. There were reports Wednesday that Saric was headed to the U.S. to sign his contract and that was confirmed Thursday by his agent, Misko Raznatovic.
There was a school of thought that Saric could stay overseas for one more season so he could avoid having to sign a rookie-scale contract for a lot less money than what he could get in 2017, but he stayed true to his original plan. Saric will make $2,318,280 in 2016-17 and some of that will go toward paying off his $1 million buyout with Anadolu Efes. The Sixers are expected to contribute $650,000, which is the limit set by the collective bargaining agreement.
The Sixers now have a full frontcourt stocked with young talent that includes Saric, Nerlens Noel, Jahlil Okafor, Joel Embiid and the 2016 No. 1 pick, Ben Simmons.
"For those who haven't seen him play, there will be a real excitement of how versatile he is," 76ers coach Brett Brown said Tuesday. "There is a toughness that the city of Philadelphia is just going to fall in love with.
Saric averaged 11.7 points, 5.8 rebounds and 1.5 assists during Euroleague games this season.
