Wizards knock off the Warriors

The Wizards held on to defeat the Warriors on Tuesday, 112–108, after jumping out to a 19-point lead in the first quarter. The Wizards have won only two other games in team history, going back to their days in Baltimore, against a team with at least 50 wins and as high of a winning percentage as the Warriors’ .847 mark entering the game. Those were in 1967 against Wilt Chamberlain’s 76ers, and 1997 against Michael Jordan’s Bulls.

Wall ties a career high in assists

John Wall tied a career high with 19 assists on Tuesday; his other games with 19 were in 2015 and earlier this year, on January 29 against the Pelicans. The only other players with 19 or more assists in a game this season were Russell Westbrook (22 on December 17) and Chris Paul (20 on December 10).

Curry’s drought ends at 14

Stephen Curry missed his first three shots from behind the arc on Tuesday, after going 0-for-11 on three-pointers in his previous game. His streak of 14 straight misses on three-pointers was his longest as a professional.

Another 40-point TD for Westbrook

Russell Westbrook scored 43 points in a triple-double as the Thunder defeated the Jazz on Tuesday. It’s the fifth time this season that Westbrook has scored 40 points in a triple double, tying the highest single-season total in NBA history. Oscar Robertson had five 40-point triple doubles in 1963–64 and James Harden also has five this season.

Westbrook’s lifetime total of eight TDs with 40-plus points is now the second-highest all-time, behind Oscar Robertson’s 22. Westbrook had been tied with Wilt Chamberlain.

Jokic’s third TD of February

Nikola Jokic scored 19 points and grabbed 16 rebounds with 10 assists in the Nuggets’ win in Chicago on Tuesday, for his third triple-double of February. Jokic, who celebrated his 22nd birthday on February 19, is the fourth-youngest player in NBA history to have three triple doubles in a month. The younger ones, all age 21, were Oscar Robertson (1960–61), Magic Johnson (1980–81) and Lamar Odom (2000–01).

Grizzlies troika all score 20 again

Mike Conley, Marc Gasol and Zach Randolph have each scored at least 20 points in each of the Grizzlies last two games -- their wins at Denver on Sunday and against Phoenix on Tuesday. They’re the first trio of Grizzlies players to score at least 20 points in back-to-back games in over 10 years, since Chucky Atkins, Pau Gasol and Mike Miller did it in January 2007.

Pistons undefeated in OT this season

Marcus Morris set a career high with 37 points on Tuesday, and for the second time this month, he scored seven points in overtime. Detroit has now won its last five overtime games, the longest current winning streak of that kind in the NBA.

Forsberg on a two-per-game pace

The Sabres led the Predators, 4–2, with less than nine minutes to play in the third period, having held the red-hot Filip Forsberg without a point. But Forsberg then took charge, assisting on a goal by Ryan Johansen which cut Buffalo’s lead to one goal, scoring the tying goal with 2:33 left in the third period, and winning the game for Nashville with a goal in overtime. Forsberg scored only one goal in his first eight games in February but he finished the month with 10 goals over his last five games. He’s the first player in Predators history to produce at least 10 goals over a five-game span, and the first player on any NHL team to do that since Pavel Bure scored 10 times over a five-game stretch for the Panthers in 2001 (March 14–20).

First OT PPG since 2008

Alex Galchenyuk’s power play goal with just over a minute remaining in overtime earned the Canadiens a 1–0 victory against the Blue Jackets on Tuesday. It was the first overtime power play goal to win a 1–0 regular-season game in the NHL since Oct. 27, 2008, when Bruins defenseman Dennis Wideman broke a goalless deadlock with an OT PPG against the Oilers in Edmonton.

Simmonds scores shorthanded and with the advantage

Wayne Simmonds scored two goals for the Flyers in their 4–0 win against the Avalanche. Simmonds’ first goal was a shorthanded tally with the game little more than four minutes old, and just over four minutes later he scored on a Flyers power play to give Philadelphia a 2–0 lead. The only other player in Flyers history who scored both a shorthanded goal and a power play goal in the first 10 minutes of a game is Rick MacLeish and he did that twice, 12 months apart (Feb. 9, 1973 and Feb. 13, 1974).

Stars come from two goals down to win

The Stars trailed the Penguins, 2–0, when the teams headed to their locker rooms for the second intermission, but Brett Ritchie, Jason Spezza and Antoine Roussel scored third-period goals for Dallas and the Stars beat Pittsburgh, 3–2. This was only the sixth time since the Stars moved to Dallas in 1993 that they won a game in regulation time after trailing by two goals or more entering the third period, and it was their first such victory since a 5–4 win against the Blackhawks on Oct. 20, 2006.

Brodie wins it in OT

Defenseman T.J. Brodie scored in overtime to give the Calgary Flames a 2–1 victory against the Kings on Tuesday. Brodie has scored four overtime goals in his NHL career with one in each of the last four seasons. The only other NHL player to score an overtime goal as a defenseman in each of the last four seasons is the Coyotes’ Oliver Ekman-Larsson. Brodie is the first d-man in Flames history to have a four-season overtime goals streak.

Another strong month for Marchand

Brad Marchand scored one goal and assisted on another in the Bruins’ 4–1 win versus the Coyotes. Marchand tallied 15 points in Boston’s 10 games in February (7 goals, 8 assists), after producing a double-digit point total in every previous month this season (October 10, November 10, December 11, January 20). He’s the first Bruins player to rack up 10 points or more in each of the first five months of an NHL season since Marc Savard did so in all six full months of play (October through March) during the 2008–09 campaign.

Talbot’s 17th road win

Cam Talbot made 25 saves in his 2–1 victory for the Oilers against the Blues in St. Louis. Talbot has played in 30 of Edmonton’s 36 road games this season, posting a league-high 17 road wins (one more than the 16 recorded by Boston’s Tuukka Rask) and a 2.24 road GAA. Before this year no Oilers goaltender had ever racked up more than 14 road victories in one NHL season.

Granlund sets career high for points in a month

Mikael Granlund tallied one goal and two assists for the Wild in their 6–5 victory over the Jets in Winnipeg. Through last November, Granlund’s NHL career high for points in a calendar month was 12, but he recorded 15 points in December and 14 in January, and with the three points he notched in Tuesday’s game, he finished February with a new monthly high of 16 points. He’s the first player in Wild team history to score at least 14 points in each of three consecutive calendar months, and the third Wild player to have a total of three such months in one season. The others were Brian Rolston in 2005–06 (December, January and March) and Marian Gaborik in 2007–08 (also December, January and March).

Jagr and Trocheck score for Panthers

Jaromir Jagr and Vincent Trocheck scored the two goals for the Panthers in their shootout victory over the Hurricanes. Jagr and Trocheck haven’t been very productive this season against Florida’s Atlantic Division rivals, with only two and five goals, respectively, in 22 intradivision contests. But they’ve done much better when facing a team from another division (like Carolina). Jagr has scored 10 goals and Trocheck 17 in Florida’s 40 interdivision games this season.

Johansson scores twice in Washington win

Marcus Johansson scored two goals and assisted on another to lead the Capitals to a 4–1 win over the Rangers in New York. Johansson’s multiple-point game was his 13th of the season and every one of those 13 games has been a Washington victory.
