We now have more context regarding the restructured contract for New England Patriots wide receiver Danny Amendola. Reports of a three-year extension with a maximum value of $15 million were accurate, but a look at the finer print reveals this is essentially a one-year contract.
As part of the restructure, Amendola’s base salary in 2015 was slashed from $4 million to $1.25 million. He did receive a signing bonus of $500,000 and his not-likely-to-be-earned incentives increased from $500,000 to $750,000. Amendola’s new salary cap charge for 2015 is $3.1 million. The Patriots saved $2.58 million on the cap with this restructure.
The final two seasons of Amendola’s contract were not altered, and it’s fair to wonder whether the Patriots will have Amendola on their roster under those terms in 2016 ($5 million) and 2017 ($6 million).
