FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- New England Patriots cornerback Darrelle Revis admitted he signed with the team last offseason for this moment: earning a trip to the Super Bowl.
“To play in these big-time games and to play for the obvious reason -- to play in the next game, the Super Bowl. Collectively as a team we’ve done that. Everybody stuck to our team goals and what we want to accomplish,” Revis said.
Revis, who is in his eighth NFL season, was humbled to finally get a chance at winning a Super Bowl.
“It’s pretty awesome,” Revis said. “There’s rookies that come in through the draft and get drafted to a great team. There’s rookies that play their first year and go to the Super Bowl. Eight years later for me, it’s very surreal. It’s pretty awesome.
“We worked hard for it. It started out in April and I just give credit to everybody in this whole organization.”
After coming off his worst game as a member of the Patriots, and possibly his career, in last week’s victory against the Baltimore Ravens, Revis elevated his game another level.
“I look at it as they are trying to attack me every play,” Revis said. “It feels great to just collectively be on the same page as a secondary, keeping a great quarterback to a minimum.”
Revis was targeted twice and did not allow a reception and also recorded an interception when he jumped underneath a pick route. He thought he had daylight to return the interception for a touchdown.
“It was there and then it closed very fast,” Revis said. “Andrew [Luck] is very athletic. After he threw it, I didn’t expect to see him gain ground that fast. He kind of hit me hard. He’s a tough player.”
Revis spoke with pride about the Patriots’ secondary as he called them “by far the best secondary I’ve been with.”
“We have a lot of experience,” Revis said. “Across the board we are very talented and just feed off of each other.”
Revis, who missed five plays (including penalties) after taking some friendly fire from linebacker Dont'a Hightower while making a tackle, underwent concussion protocol but said he was fine.
With a matchup against the Seattle Seahawks in the Super Bowl, Revis was asked if he is prepared for the comparisons between him and Richard Sherman.
“That’s not going to happen,” Revis said.
