Friday at Fontainebleau Las Vegas, Rafael "El Divino" Espinoza made the first defense of his WBO featherweight title with a dominant fourth-round TKO victory over Sergio Chirino.
Espinoza (25-0, 21 KOs), of Guadalajara, Mexico, dropped Chirino in Round 1 and Round 3, before a flurry of punches forced Chirino to take a knee in the fourth round. He stood up but referee Raul Caiz Jr. decided to wave off the fight with .15 seconds to go in the round.
This was Espinoza's eighth stoppage victory in his last 10 fights. Chirino (22-2, 13 KOs), of Chiapas, Mexico, was coming off a 13-fight winning streak. It was his first loss since a second-round KO defeat against Mauricio Lara almost six years ago.
"From the beginning, the hunger that I have to triumph, to be better and to move forward was apparent," Espinoza said about his performance. "I gave my heart, and it shows.
"I'm here. It's my time. The time of 'El Divino.' I want to unify, and I want the big challenges."
With the victory, Espinoza moves up one spot to No. 4 in the featherweight division.
ESPN's divisional boxing rankings highlight the best in the sport in every weight class. They will change often, based on recent results and performances. Rankings are based on what a fighter has accomplished in the weight division in which he is ranked. Fighters who have announced they are moving to a different weight class will be ranked in that new division, if warranted, only once they fight in that weight class. Fighters who currently own titles in two divisions can be ranked in both.
Fighters who haven't competed in the past 12 months -- and don't have a fight scheduled -- will be dropped from the rankings until they fight again. Any fighter who tests positive for a performance-enhancing substance will also be removed. That boxer will be eligible to re-enter the rankings after his next bout.
Rankings are determined by Mike Coppinger, Nick Parkinson, Damian Delgado Averhoff and Andres Ferrari. They are updated weekly on Tuesdays.
