Dominican Republic ends Australia's Little League journey

Little League World Series

Australia's Little League World series is over after a heart-breaking 8-7 loss to the Dominican Republic, their second loss of the tournament.

The Hills, representing Australia for the second-straight year, were beaten 8-0 in their first game against a powerful Japanese side before today's elimination game against Los Bravos de Pontezuela, representing the Caribbean region.

The Hills started well with Harrison Wheeldon on the mound, keeping the opposition scoreless in the first two innings while scoring a run in each to lead 2-0. But a blow-out six-run third innings put the Dominican Republic into a dominant position half-way through the game.

The Dominican Republic scored another two runs at the top of the fifth innings to lead 8-2, before Australia started a spirited fightback. Two runs at the bottom of the fifth brought the score to 8-4 before the rally continued in the bottom of the sixth. Three more runs saw them finish an agonising one run short of levelling the scores.

The Dominican Republic go on to face the loser of the Canada, Latin America clash, while the Australians are left to rue the five errors they made in their narrow loss.
