Marshall indicted on fraud charges

SAVANNAH, Ga. -- A federal grand jury in Savannah has indicted a former NFL and University of Georgia football player on mortgage fraud charges.

The 22-count indictment in U.S. District Court charges Arthur James Marshall Jr. with bank fraud, mail fraud and money laundering. U.S. Attorney Edmund A. Booth Jr. said Wednesday that authorities arrested Marshall in Miami.

Prosecutors say Marshall defrauded three banks in the Augusta area of more than $1 million in real estate loans.

Marshall played five years in the NFL as a wide receiver with the Denver Broncos and New York Giants. He played at Georgia from 1988 to 1991.

Marshall's business, Custom Contractors and Associates, filed for bankruptcy in August. No home phone number was available for Marshall and it was unclear if he had hired an attorney.
