COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- Maryland presented Gary Williams a victory in his 1,000th game as a college head coach, getting 19 points from slow-starting Greivis Vasquez in an 88-64 rout of North Carolina State on Saturday night.
Vasquez scored 17 after halftime on 6-for-8 shooting, and Landon Milbourne finished with 18 points for the Terrapins (13-5, 3-1 Atlantic Coast Conference).
Williams is 638-362 over a 32-year coaching career that began at American University and included stays at Boston College and Ohio State. He is 431-234 in 21 seasons at Maryland, where he won the 2002 national championship.
Williams' latest victory at his alma mater, combined with Virginia's loss at Wake Forest, lifted the Terrapins into a tie atop the ACC standings.
Tracy Smith scored 18 for N.C. State (13-7, 2-4). Coming off a home win over Duke, the Wolfpack fell behind early in losing six straight to Maryland.
