Howard saves valuable point for Everton

LONDON -- American goalkeeper Tim Howard saved a stoppage-time penalty as Everton rallied from two goals down for a 2-2 draw against Tottenham in the Premier League on Sunday.

Howard blocked Jermain Defoe's spot kick with his legs to safeguard a valuable point for Everton, which is just three points above the relegation zone.

"(Striker) Louis Saha gave me a word of advice before the penalty," Howard said. "I knew what to expect, but he tipped me off a little bit. There's so much video now that there's not one penalty you can't see."

The save was a good omen for Howard, who could face Defoe again when the Americans play England in their World Cup opener next June.

Defoe had put Spurs ahead 2 minutes into the second half and Michael Dawson doubled their advantage with more than 30 minutes left at Goodison Park. Saha began the comeback with a 78th-minute goal, and Australian midfielder Tim Cahill grabbed the equalizer on his 30th birthday.

The draw ended a three-match losing streak in the league and kept Tottenham in fourth place, one point behind Arsenal, which has a game in hand over its north London rival.

In Sunday's other match, Fulham moved back into the top half of the standings by beating Sunderland 1-0. Chelsea's lead at the top was trimmed to two points Saturday when Carlo Ancelotti's side lost 2-1 at Manchester City and Manchester United won 4-0 at West Ham.

Werder extended its unbeaten run to 23 games in all competitions but remained three points behind Leverkusen, which also drew 0-0 in Hannover on Saturday. Schalke beat last-place Hertha Berlin 2-0 to move past Bayern into third place.

Stuttgart fired coach Markus Babbel on Sunday and replaced him with Christian Gross, a Swiss who previously led FC Basel into the Champions League.

ROME -- French striker Jonathan Biabiany scored his first two goals in Serie A to earn Parma a 2-2 draw at Genoa and move his side into fourth place in the standings.
