QB Rettig picks up first offer

Quarterback Chase Rettig (San Clemente, Calif.) finally picked up his first scholarship offer late last week but said two other heavyweight programs could be on the verge of offering as well.

When quarterback Joe Boisture de-committed from Boston College to Michigan State, the Eagles wasted no time in offering another quarterback and that signal caller was Rettig.

"I was excited, I felt like it was a long time coming," Rettig said. "I had been to Boston College a couple of times and had a good relationship with the coaches there. So it wasn't really a big surprise that they offered but I was still stoked by it."

Rettig has been one busy camper this spring and summer and spent a couple of days at USC's Rising Stars Camp last week.

"It went really well, I thought I had a good camp both days," Rettig said. "The coaches were up front and honest with me and said Jesse Scroggins is their top guy right now and I know they offered him after the camp.

"Right now, Jesse is also looking at Tennessee and Florida and I camped with Tennessee and did well there too. The coaches at USC and Tennessee have both told me that if Scroggins goes elsewhere, they'll offer me. I hear Jesse could announce pretty soon here so hopefully I'll have a good idea of what I'll be doing in a couple of weeks as well."

Rettig was at the final Elite 11 regional camp in Las Vegas last weekend and had just a sub par day by his standards.

"I never got loose and my back tightened up on me right away," Rettig said. "I couldn't move around very well and I just tried to suck it up and do the best I could. I know it wasn't my best workout but I feel like I got better as the day went on."

Rettig did look stronger toward the second half of the day and even with the stiff back, still showed off one of the strongest arms in the camp. He still needs work on his touch and overall feel for the deep ball but his upside is very good.

More Elite 11 Notes

• One player that really opened up a lot of eyes was Garrett Grayson (Vancouver, Wash./Heritage). Grayson was the QB MVP at the NIKE Camp in Oregon a few weeks ago and looked even better in Vegas. One of the biggest mysteries out West this year is why does a player with Grayson's ability not have a single scholarship offer.

At 6-2, 195 pounds, Grayson has one of the most athletic quarterback body's you'll see and is a tremendous athlete. He had the top SPARQ Rating at the NIKE Combine in Portland where he clocked a 4.63-40 and jumped almost 38 inches in the vertical. He threw for 2,900 yards and 26 touchdowns and showed in Vegas he has all the physical tools to play and excel at the next level.

Grayson can make all the throws and has a strong, accurate arm. He won the Golden Gun Accuracy Challenge at the end of the camp as the most accurate quarterback of the day and when you look at his frame, arm strength and ability to move around, his upside is tremendous.

• Like Rettig, Tyler Bray (Kingsburg, Calif.) is another kid who has hit the camp circuit hard. He looked strong at the USC Rising Stars Camp and impressed in Vegas with his big arm and ability to get the ball down field.

"I play for a really small school in a small area so not a lot of people or colleges know about me," Bray said. "I play three sports in high school and I actually had a baseball game the night before the NIKE Camp at Stanford so I know that wasn't my best performance.

"I got a lot of confidence at the USC Skills camp and then at the Rising Stars Camp as well. I feel good about Vegas, I think you always think you could have done better but overall, I thought I had a good day."

Bray picked up an early offer from Fresno State and San Diego State has jumped in and offered as well. If Bray puts off committing early and goes through his senior season, he could be one of the most heavily recruited players in the West next fall.

• Brett Nottingham (Danville, Calif./Monte Vista) came in to Vegas with a lot of confidence after strong camp performances at Colorado, Stanford and UCLA. All three colleges offered scholarships and the signal caller fulfilled a lifelong dream committing to the Bruins, where both parents and two of his sisters attended.

Nottingham had a good workout and is one of those quarterbacks that just does everything well although he may not wow you in any one respect. His arm looked a bit tired after attending so many camps the previous weeks but arm strength will not be an issue at the next level.

Nottingham already has a college body at a solid 6-4, 210 pounds, takes great drops, throws well on the run as well as in the pocket and is a great leader with a magnetic personality.

• We've seen a ton of Tyler Shreve (Redlands East Valley, Calif.) over the last year and this was by far his best workout. Shreve's arm look strong and he was throwing with confidence and was very decisive in where to go with the ball.

The signal caller is a good athlete but needs to quicken his drops. He can be a tad mechanical at times but overall had a very good day and with his size, arm strength and mobility, he's definitely a player who translates well to the next level.
