Report: Campbell to return to Big South

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Campbell will leave the Atlantic Sun Conference and return to the Big South in the 2011-12 academic year, a person with knowledge of the decision said Wednesday.

The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because an official announcement had not been made. The school called a news conference for Thursday morning.

The move will include the men's and women's basketball programs. The Camels' new football program will remain in the non-scholarship Pioneer League.

Campbell was a charter member of the Big South in 1983 but 11 years later left for what is now the Atlantic Sun. Becoming the Big South's 11th member will help cut travel costs for the Buis Creek, N.C., school.

The move was first reported by The Fayetteville Observer.
