The much-ballyhooed face-to-face meeting between Yankees GM Brian Cashman and CC Sabathia was finally scheduled to kick off Sunday night in Las Vegas, according to a baseball source with knowledge of the meeting. But it wasn't Cashman who requested this close encounter.
It was actually Sabathia's agent, Greg Genske, who asked to meet with the Yankees, the source said.
Even more interesting is the fact that Genske also requested a meeting with the Red Sox delegation to discuss Sabathia. That session is now expected to take place sometime Monday.
The Red Sox aren't currently viewed as a major contender to land Sabathia. And it's unlikely they would make an offer in the same range as the Yankees (six years, $140 million). But at the very least, they always enjoy making the Yankees worry that they might make a run at any major free agent the Yankees are interested in.
