LUCERNE, Switzerland -- European soccer's governing body
called in police to investigate match-fixing accusations involving
15 games in Eastern Europe.
The allegations, reportedly based on unusual betting patterns in
Asia, were turned over to Interpol, UEFA said Saturday. The 15
games also are being dealt with by UEFA's disciplinary committee.
UEFA declined to reveal which games were involved, but they
reportedly include qualifying matches for the 2008 European
Championship, Champions League, UEFA Cup and Intertoto Cup.
The German magazine Der Spiegel said the majority of teams
involved in the allegations were from Bulgaria, Georgia, Serbia,
Croatia and the Baltic nations Lithuania, Estonia and Latvia.
