Over the weekend, there was a flurry of activity, as far as commitments go, around the Southeast.
Athlete Blake Sims (Gainesville, Ga./Gainesville) committed to Alabama and was a strong pickup for the Crimson Tide. Sims likely will play in the secondary, but will get a shot at quarterback, where he plays for his high school team.
Georgia Tech added a quality defensive lineman to its roster when Atlanta-area standout Denzel McCoy (Duluth, Ga./Northview) committed to the Yellow Jackets instead of Florida State, Notre Dame, Auburn, Tennessee or North Carolina.
Auburn landed linebacker Jake Holland (Pelham, Ala./Pelham). He has tremendous work ethic and is a player that one could easily see taking over the middle linebacker spot for 2-3 years, as long as he develops as he should.
The Tigers also picked up receiver Shaun Kitchens (College Park, Ga./Banneker), a 6-foot-3, 210-pound member of the ESPNU150.
Young corner sees Florida
Class of 2011 cornerback Nick Waisome (Groveland, Fla./South Lake) made an unofficial visit to Florida over the weekend. He got a tour of the new weight room and coaches' offices, met with the Gators' defensive coaches and took in the scrimmage. Waisome has been building quite a name for himself with strong performances at the Jacksonville Under Armour Combine, the Badger Sports 7-on-7 in Tampa and most recently, the Miami Nike Football Training Camp.
Two-sport star
Virginia Tech, Wake Forest, Maryland and East Carolina have offered athlete Jake Skole (Roswell, Ga./Blessed Trinity) for football, but Skole is also a standout baseball prospect with scholarship offers in that sport from most of the SEC and ACC.
The 6-1, 195-pounder had more than 90 tackles during the 2008 football season and is definitely a Division I prospect in that sport. At least one SEC baseball program also believes he's an elite prospect in that sport and could be one of the best in the country.
That's not a surprise because his older brother, Matt Skole, plays third base at Georgia Tech and was recently named the ACC Player of the Week.
If that's not enough, his high school basketball team just finished as the state runner-up. He plays guard on that team.
Skole believes he can play football and baseball in college and plans to do so.

• ESPNU150 running back Marcus Lattimore (Duncan, S.C./James F. Byrnes) had a good visit to Florida State this past weekend and ESPN affiliate NoleInsider.com reports that the Seminoles have made up a lot of ground and could be toward the top of his list at this point.
• Running back Storm Johnson (Loganville, Ga./Loganville) is exactly the type of big, fast back (like Charles Scott) that LSU has utilized quite well in recent years. It's no surprise that the Tigers are out in front as ESPN affiliate TigerGumbo.com reported.
• West Virginia is the latest offer for fast-rising cornerback Merrill Noel (Pahokee, Fla./Pahokee)
• Defensive tackle D.J. McCellion (Delray Beach, Fla./Atlantic) told ESPN affiliate TheBigSpur.com that South Carolina leads Central Florida and South Florida for his services. The Gamecocks offered McCellion in early March.
