The Red Raiders have a new tradition: picking weekly captains. It's something that seems to be a hit with players.
"I love that process," said offensive lineman Marlon Winn in a conference call on Monday. "It pushes the team and definitely pushes the captains. For the guys that aren't, they want to work harder to become a team captain. It's a great addition to our team."
Winn was a captain on Saturday, as was Brandon Sharpe, Bront Bird, Baron Batch and Brett Dewhurst, according to coach Mike Leach. He said the process of picking captains isn't too difficult for the team.
"This is kind of a 'what have you done for me lately?' business and game," Leach said. "Even though, it's a little tedious, it's not bad. Sunday meeting they'll elect new captains so other voices will emerge. They elect whoever they want and then of course we tally it up and see who it is. You know, there's been some really key guys. We've had some great
guys emerge. It shifts a little bit here and there based on who has big game sand stuff like that but I think we've had good selections and I think it also spreads the voices among the team a little bit."
