CARSON, Calif. -- The Colorado Rapids survived a one-man disadvantage for 84 minutes to defeat the Los Angeles Galaxy 4-2 in penalty kicks Tuesday night in qualifying for the U.S. Open Cup.
The teams played to a scoreless tie after 90 minutes of regulation and 30 minutes of overtime.
The Rapids played with 10 men after Greg Dalby received a red card in the 36th minute. But the Galaxy failed to convert any of their 24 shots, six of them on goal.
Omar Cummings, Mehdi Ballouchy, Colin Clark and Ugo Ihemelu made Colorado's penalty kicks. Rapids goalkeeper Preston Burpo dived to his left to smother Chris Klein's shot and dived to his right to deflect Mike Magee's attempt.
Alan Gordon and Bryan Jordan converted penalty kicks for Los Angeles.
The Rapids will play either the Seattle Sounders FC or Real Salt Lake in the second qualifying round. Seattle and Real Salt Lake face each other April 28.
The U.S. Open Cup, which began in 1914, features 40 professional and amateur teams competing for the national soccer championship.
