Western Province took another step towards a home Currie Cup semi-final after they beat the Golden Lions 65-38 in a 14-try thriller at Emirates Airline Park in Johannesburg on Saturday afternoon.

Sixe of this tries came in the first half for the visiting Western Province to take a 39-10 lead at the break.

The Lions attempted a comeback in the second half through a penalty try as well as scores from Pieter Jansen and Hacjivah Dayimani to add to their lone first half try scored by James Venter.

It wasn't enough, though, as Western Province continued to score at regular intervals including braces for Dillyn Leyds and Sergeal Petersen and 25 points from SP Marais including a try and seven conversions.

Leon Massyn scored for the hosts on the stroke of full time, but it was too little to late for the hosts.

Western Province will return home to host the Griquas next weekend, while the Lions will travel to Durban to take on the so-far unbeaten Sharks.
